In this video, we’ll cook up a quick and easy stovetop version of the popular Hot Dog relish/sauce called the Red Onion Sauce, which many New Yorkers love.

Sabrett, a major hot dog company in New York, is famous for this onions in sauce, which with this recipe you can now make at home.

I grew up in New York and always needed this red onion relish on my hot dogs with mustard and sauerkraut. That was my favorite way to have a hot dog. It’s nothing fancy, but really tasty. You can find this at any place that sells hot dogs from popular places like Gray’s Papaya and Nathan’s Famous to any of the thousands of hot dog pushcarts in NYC, which serve up what many New Yorkers lovingly call “dirty water dogs”.

This is an easy, simple and quick recipe for the popular onion sauce which will take your taste buds to NYC, that can be put together in any part of the world in the same time you need to cook up your hot dogs.

If you’ve had it before or if you make it from this recipe, let me know what you think!

INGREDIENTS LIST
Note: This will make enough sauce for about four or so hot dogs, so scale up accordingly.

1 medium to large onion
2 tablespoons of olive oil (to coat the surface of the pot)
1/4 cup of ketchup
1/4 cup of vinegar (white)
Teaspoon (or tablespoon, your choice) of Garlic powder

Optional: teaspoon of cayenne pepper (the last part probably could be less or optional).

After making the marinade/sauce, be sure to set aside about half of this if you want to use this as a sauce when the tacos are done.
