How much coffee do you have during the day? I am curious because I have like 5-6 and friends tell me it’s too much. What is a normal (healthy) amount of coffee during the day?

  1. usually 1 big mug, sometimes a 2nd one in the morning.
If I’m out to breakfast I’ve had as many as 6 cups.

  2. 150 mg – 225 mg of caffeine depending on if I get it somewhere, the office, or at home.

Your brain adapts to the amount of caffeine, so over time you can drink more and more without feeling any effect. But the caffeine is still pushing you. I’d recommend some decaf if you want to drink it that often per day.

I drink anywhere from 3-5 cups a day. Usually 2-3 in the morning, and then maybe 1-2 in the afternoon / evening. You’re fine. You can actually drink a lot of coffee and it’s not bad for you. Make sure you drink water as well though!

Depends… 😉 Usually thee single shot espressos. But none after 4pm.

    a nespresso double-shot is probably half a coffee from a cafe’s caffeine.

Doctor here. In terms of mortality our best estimate is 1 to 2 regular cups is most associated with lower all cause mortality.

5-6 cups a day like you have is not associated with any specific negative effect, unless it is individual to you ( such as tremor, fast heart rate , nausea etc). If you’re ok with 6 cups then carry on.

This is obviously a bit of oversimplifying as things like when you consume, how much you sleep etc will have effects too..

Looks like a Nespresso machine in the picture? The pods hold about 5 or 6 grams of coffee, which would put you at about 25-30g of coffee for the day, which is reasonable, I wouldn’t say too much.

    I have about 18g a day, any more and I won’t sleep

Around 2 espressi and 1 latte macchiato a week, on average from Sept-April and none during the warm months. I drink more Black tea and white tea.

  11. Honestly usually about 7 a day, but today I’m already on my 5th as I am off work and haven’t left the house & it’s not even noon. So I am guessing I will end on about 10.
Coffee is the only think I drink other than taking a bottle of water to bed & vodka if I’m on a rare night out.

1 cappuccino a day with 18g of medium roast beans 😊

You can’t really compare “# of coffees per day” or even “cups of coffee per day” because a “cup of coffee” is not a standard measurement and the caffeine content varies greatly, mostly depending on how much actual coffee is used to brew the cup. 1 cup of my 1:15 ratio pourover is going to be massively more caffeine than your creamy liquid coming out of a Nespresso or kcup

On workdays i drink like 3 to 5 cups, but never after 15h. When im off, i either dont drink at all or make a really fancy one.

3 & under is fine. I usually stay with 1-2 (because after 5+ years, I could tell I started slightly craving it with only that much). They say 4-5 or more is the point of creating dependency/a tolerance

Drink until it messes with your sleep or your heart.

  17. I drank 2-3 cups a day for many years. When I got Covid I didn’t drink coffee for a week and have stopped drinking coffee regularly for a while now. I only drink it occasionally in social situations. I’ve noticed caffeine is way more effective now whereas before I had built up a tolerance and its effects were more subtle.

I’ll have two 12oz lattes which equals 4 shots of espresso. I get High on my own supply

  21. KCcoffeegeek

I’m good with one large cup (approx 325g by weight) or 1-3 shots of espresso.

Excessive caffeine has killed people. Most times it doesn’t even take a lot.. like the Panera incident

  23. It depends on the day. I usually just take the spare shots throughout the day with a few ounces of milk. I’ll have somewhere between 6-10 pretty much every day. And usually a cafe au lait or two as well because I steamed too much milk or wanted to kill the pot and make the next one.

  24. Double espresso when I get up, and then 1 cup of coffee around 11. Then onto decaf tea and decaf coffee. I also drink decaf coca cola after 5pm. A hint of caffeine in my system after mid day and I feel like it impacts my sleep.

I usually drink 1-2 cups a day. There is such a thing as too much coffee. I remember a piece in the New York Times by a man who was either a prospective medical student or a med school graduate who was studying furiously for his exams. He was dizzy and shaky and it turned out the cause was the 12 cups of coffee he was drinking. I wondered what kind of doctor he would be that he needed to visit an ER to figure that out.

  26. it’s too much, I basically drink 1 cup (caffeine) and 1 cup (decaf) per day.

Volume matters too. If you are having 5 oz cups then you are only having a little more than someone who has one 16 oz large coffee

Just watch out for elevated blood pressure, if it’s at a normal level then your preferred coffee intake is probably fine.
