So I was reading Greger’s “How Not to Age” and I was pretty surprised about the protein information. I knew animal protein increased IGF-1 and mTor but apparently even plant protein can do it if you eat enough.

Aging experts like Luigi Fontana and Valter Longo also recommend eating low protein diets for delaying aging and other diseases like cancer, because of the IGF-1 link.

My question is: What if you want to build muscle? They recommend no more than 50-60 g of protein for an average size male but that’s not enough for muscle building. Are you just doomed to be skinny all of your life? You have to choose between building muscle and having high IGF-1 because of the high protein intake?

The last time I check 0.82 g/lbs was enough to build muscle, so that’s 123g of protein for a 150 lbs male. But according to Luigi Fontana that’s excessive and it will increasing IGF-1 and mTor (check the screenshot from his book).

So if you consume a high(er) protein diet to gain muscle you just can’t escape the negative effects?
