I received this jam as a gift but kind of scared to eat it.
It’s a plum jam that a patient of mine gave me. How do I know if it’s safe? I haven’t opened it yet. It’s plum jam.

I would ask them how it’s prepared and processed.
It looks to me like it might be pflaumenmus/povidl.
My parents made this (and a cherry version) when I was growing up and it’s quite delicious and, apparently, “healthier” than regular plum jam.
In terms of safety, that’s trickier. I’m not sure there is an approved safe recipe for plum butter, but others here might know better. If it’s from someone you trust and it’s recently made it might be fine.

I’m paranoid and have never been able to accept home canned goods from others

Idk. People give me stuff like this frequently but SOME of those people have questionable hygiene. I graciously accept and throw it away. If they ask about it later I pretend I loved it. Not trying to get botulism.
