I picked up this pit from my neighbor. Do you think it will work?
Any suggestions to add anything to it?
What is the metal grid material called?
Can I get that at Lowe’s and cut a new grill top out of a sheet?

Expanded metal. You can order it cut to your size online. Is the fire just in the chamber?

Looks like it’ll work pretty well when you learn it. I kinda like that you can set it up for searing/grilling as well as that vertical smoke chamber.
Since you’re already working on it, it might try to rig up some hanging or shelf system in the vertical area so you can get more meat in there.
Did it start life as a custom homebrew rig or is it branded? I have question about how the exhaust works lol.
Best of luck!

I’d love to have that. Make sure you can hang something like a few ribs in that vertical

Does this even work?

Odd design, but looks to be well built.
The vertical segment will have no airflow with the door closed, which is strange. Normally you would want more convection when barbecuing. That part of the pit will basically be an oven instead, unless you crack that door a bit while cooking. And then the main door is basically a grilling area I guess.
I’d probably try to rig this thing up to work differently than designed. Maybe build fire at extreme right side of main chamber, plug the stack, crack the door on the vertical chamber, and then put my food on the left side of the main chamber and/or in the vertical part.
But the other thing is, if you just put some fire in there and some meat, it will make barbecue. Trial and error will be your friend.

Where the heck is the exhaust?

Interesting design. I’d assume the left vertical chamber is the firebox? If so, do you have a door on the left to get the ash out? Or does it work differently?

There should be a smoke stack located to the extreme left on the vertical tower. Where does this thing exhaust from? I think somebody else has a question to.
