Hello! I’ve had trouble keeping my second basil plant healthy. Despite using high-quality soil, watering weekly, and relying on worm castings instead of fertilizer, the stem is turning brown. Any insights on what might be going wrong?

The stem naturally gets woody as it gets older.

Looks fine to me the bottom of the stem is probably just toughened from wind. Its about the size where it will really start to grow quickly

Agree with everyone but I would say to top it now so it can get a better structure. Also what have you fed it? Looks hungry

I would top it, pinch those large bunches off the top and use them. Needs to get stronger by bushing out. More you pinch of the top when lanky the larger and stronger it will get. My basil is four years old and in phoenix so it gets nailed by heat many days and freezing temps the winter but it survives. It’s much heartier than you think, don’t be afraid to give good chops and haircuts to make it a better plant! 🌱
