First time poster, long time lurker on this sub and I’ve had great meals from all of your recommendations. I feel compelled to post about Meju in Long Island City, NY because it was a absolutely stand-out experience.
Chef Hooni Kim is a master and lover of Korean fermentation. Before every dish, he explained to the 8 people present about the properties of the type of fermentation that we’re trying and his personal connection to the dish. The atmosphere felt more like a dinner party with questions encouraged. It was a leisurely meal of 3 hours where we were able to savor every bite and know the story of every element of the dish thanks to Chef Kim.
Everything was delicious, with all meats, vegetables, and sides incredibly memorable. We left feeling both full and oddly refreshed, thanks to the carefully cultured fermentation.
I didn’t take many pictures, but here are the pictures of the menu, part of the 8 person seating counter, ssamjang + beef platter, doenjang + tofu, and then the dessert sikhye + red bean.
Overall, this was definitely my favorite New York City dining experience so far, and I highly recommend locals and visitors alike make it out to L.I.C. for Meju.
