The insides of this Nespresso tumbler seems to be peeling(?) off – is this safe to continue using?

Following out of curiosity because I’m looking to buy this cup. I use Starbucks cups often and mine always get a coffee stain on the inside similar to this. Every now and then I use pink paste to clean the inside. Sometimes it’s also my dishwasher failing to dry the inside like a glass cup

As a general rule when coatings start to wear off you should discontinue usage as it may release toxic chemicals into food, the under layer may not be properly food safe, and you may ingest any particles that are peeling off.

I feel like nespresso should replace it for free. Call them

Just for context, I have 4 of these and I see this coating peeling on 3 of them. I’ve tried wiping them off in case they were stains but they’re not. I guess I should contact Nespresso and see what they say?

That’s crazy I’ve never had this happen to mine! I’ve had one for over a year and use it almost daily and always wash in the dishwasher, no issues whatsoever. My other one I’ve had for around 6 months and use it also almost daily and no issues.
Definitely contact Nespresso, they should replace it for free.

It looks like what would happen if you put it through a dishwasher Most cups like that say hand wash only for this purpose

Nope call the club and see if they can replace it

Is it made in China? Get rid of it.

I wouldn’t use it once it start peeling. Fun fact, I pried my lid apart on that very tumbler and found a lot of stuff growing in it. I tossed mine and bought a tumbler I could clean properly.

I stopped using my tumbler once a post came up that showed how dirty the ‘in-between’ portion of the lid was, pop the two sides off and it was disgusting.

I hate how Nespresso had to ruin their cup by coating the insides… I’m definitely not buying one from them now

I had a Yeti do exactly the same (regularly goes through the dishwasher) I was about to throw it out but checked online and read that it’s just a build up of coffee stains, there is no coating, it’s made of bare stainless steel. I used some Barman’s Friend cleaner and it’s totally gone and back like new!!

What coffee is doing that? Sulphurico Lungo?

Yea you might wanna change it just to be secure, if I was in your shoes I would do it

Do you stir with a metal spoon ?

Hopefully that is not a coating peeling, and it’s just stains from the dishwasher detergent or something else. Someone already mentioned cleaning with barkeepers friend but also some vinegar would probably do the trick. I have some cheap stainless steel cooking pans that are not coated with anything that I run through the dishwasher occasionally and have to clean with vinegar to get rid of stains. Definitely update us if you attempt to clean these ways OP, I wanted one of these tumblers but certainly not if they are coating the metal.

This isn’t a coating peeling. This is a residue building up from the coffee over time. It’s likely a stain and if you use a cleaner like barkeepers friend on the inside it will be fine.
