PHILADELPHIA, USA – Welcome to Philadelphia! Easily the most famous food in all of Philadelphia, and one of the most famous foods in the United States is the Philly cheesesteak or spelled cheese steak. Today we’re going on an ultimate Philly cheesesteak tour – we’re going to eat 5 different cheesesteaks in Philadelphia! #Philly #cheesesteak #Philadelphia

Pat’s King of Steaks (https://goo.gl/maps/Atz65Afjh6PKKGGr7) – Cheesesteak – $12 – First, Pat’s King of Steaks, where it all started. At first it didn’t include cheese, so it was just a steak sandwich. At Pat’s the steak is frizzled, and they generously add cheese whiz. Even though locals say Pat’s is a tourist trap, they deserve credit for being the original and starting it all. I would say it was a fantastic experience, and even just being there eating a cheesesteak there on the corner with its history was cool. And their cheese fries were amazing.

Geno’s Steaks (https://goo.gl/maps/HJ3Vp9nLKMLxBytz6) – Mushroom cheesesteak – $12 – Next up, when you eat at Pat’s, there’s no way you can’t walk across the intersection to Geno’s Steaks, known for its giant logo and bright lights. Their steak is unchopped, just thin slices, but it’s nice and tender. We actually tried a mushroom provolone cheese steak here. Overall, it was pretty pure, not the best, but not bad.

L & M Variety Store (https://goo.gl/maps/VYm3ukTixUt7CxGt7) – Cheesesteak – $5 – Next up for one of the common local stops to eat a Philly cheesesteak, a corner convenience store. For $5 in Philadelphia, it doesn’t get much better. As JL mentioned, one of the best things about a corner store is that you often know the owners and can customize it how you like it.

Dalessandro’s Steaks (https://goo.gl/maps/Lj2dpKzYfHTDJUCi6) – Cheesesteak – $11 – Another local famous popular is Dalessandro’s Steaks, and they have a line to show. We ordered their classic cheesesteak, with cheese whiz and onions. Overall, it was good, but the steak was a little overly shredded to the point of almost being minced meat.

Jim’s South St. (https://g.page/JimsSouthSt?share) – Cheesesteak – $10.25 – Lastly to complete this cheesesteak tour of Philadelphia, we went to Jim’s South St. I think this was the cheese steak that surprised both JL and I, and to be honest it was probably the best of the day. The steak was tender, the bread was soft and fluffy, and the whiz was perfectly layered on the bottom and top with plenty of grilled onions.

Additionally, though not in this video, we had 2 other cheesesteaks in Philadelphia, which were to be honest, probably the best 2 I had in Philadelphia: John’s Roast Pork (https://youtu.be/EZozuJQZ7Q0) and Angelo’s Pizzeria (video coming)

to philly’s great day today

we are in philadelphia and we’re going
to go on an
ultimate philly cheesesteak tour
now philly cheesesteak is
probably i mean not only is it the most
iconic food of philadelphia and it’s a
culture
in philadelphia but it’s one of the top
fast food dishes
in the united states hands down hands
down
jay are you ready to go on an ultimate
cheesesteak tour yeah i’m gonna take you
around we’re gonna go to some
popular places i’m gonna take you on
some some not so popular places right
here just a five dollar holler we’re
going to enjoy the philly cheesesteak
culture here man
the first time in philadelphia you got
to try
a whiz whip it’s going to be a meaty
experience the beef juices are going to
flow we cannot wait to take you on this
ultimate cheesesteak tour of
philadelphia let’s get a mark
it’s gonna be a lot of fun mainly we’re
just gonna have a lot of fun and eat a
lot of cheesesteak
that’s gino’s over there
over here across the corner across the
road
that’s pat’s king of stakes
who invented the philly cheese steak and
so we thought it was only right to begin
at the very origin where cheese steak
all began
the line is not too bad today it’s not
too bad um
you know yeah i’m gonna take him around
passing gino’s so he can
you know be a tourist you know be a
tourist here but
you know i don’t want y’all to be like
yo jeff why do you take him there you
know we’re doing
history giving y’all some history giving
y’all some facts here so i always pay
homage to the og’s passengers they’re
the ogs of the city all right
so pay some respect to your og’s here so
you come over here they have a whole
instructional
uh sign here that that shows you how to
order philly style right you got
wit without that’s with onions or
without onions you got
you got to state your cheese you can say
witch you could say pro-v
uh american cheese is mainly just known
like you know widow without pretty much
so
and i’ve never gotten a pizza steak here
honestly i just do
whiz wit or you actually have a like
quite a few options
[Music]
yeah let’s try that okay okay
whatever you want cheese fries so it’s
pretty cool you you make your order at
the counter
you can then come over here they have a
big glass window where you can see all
the steak going
they just keep a constant flow it’s like
everlasting
steak going on that griddle it just like
looks like it goes down the griddle as
it cooks more and more
until you have a pile of steak at the
end they have the bread ready
already cracked open he’s putting cheese
on in the back steak goes
in boom they’ve got a system going right
out the window you pay
right out the window your steak is ready
that is fast
fast man get you in and out like late
nights you come here late night like two
three in the morning after the club
people want to eat and if you don’t feed
the people they get rowdy so
they got the ordering system they know
what they’re doing
[Music]
there you go this
awesome they actually have a self
condiment station oh nice
oh yeah oh
that whiz
as soon as i finish
[Music]
[Applause]
that cheese whiz drip you said the best
the best cheese fries in the world the
best cheese fries in the world
you used to work here at pat’s king of
steaks i did so cool to meet you
appreciate it thank you it’s an honor to
meet you thank you man
i love how you self-serve the condiments
you can put as many of those fried
chilies as you like in there
the onions are in there man and that
cheese whiz is oozing
oh man i mean normally you put the
peppers off to the side so everybody you
can just take a bite with it yeah that’s
a good idea otherwise it might just the
entire thing might collapse on first
bite it’s gonna be a messy experience
right here yeah
you could just chill oh this is our
first cheesesteak and again
the original the inventor of the
cheesesteak
it’s sloppy it’s gooey the bun feels
soft that whoa
where it’s a little bit windy out here
today so napkins are flying chili’s are
flying
cheese whiz is oozing all over the place
we better take our first bite
cheers man
oh yeah oh chase that with them
oh man bite of the steak with the
with the bread with the cheese was
followed by that pickled chili
oh that just makes it pop makes it burst
my favorite part right here
take a big bite then get to the cherry
peppers the bread is actually really
good
it’s soft it’s lightly steamed the
inside is really fluffy
with a little bit of a chewiness the
steak is in pretty big pieces
it’s not ultra tender beef but you taste
the meatiness of the beef
the onions are fried in there the cheese
whiz is just
everywhere within there
it’s actually pretty pretty awesomely
tasty
okay and on that bite let’s talk a
little bit about the history
of the philadelphia cheesesteak which
was invented at patch
it was back in 1930 around the early
1930s
when pat and harry oliveira they
actually had a hot dog cart
one day i think they had some steak
lying around and they decided to put
that into a roll
put that into a hoagie roll and eat it
as a sandwich
as the story goes a cab driver was
driving by he saw the steak sandwich he
said give me one of those
he loved it and by the way at that point
the steak sandwich didn’t include cheese
so it was not a cheesesteak it was just
a steak sandwich cab driver said give me
one of those
and he liked it and he said you have to
add this to your this menu you have to
you have to start selling it
that was the beginning of pat’s king of
steaks eventually cheese came
later and so eventually all other cheese
steaks originate
at pat’s king of steaks and so that’s
something to acknowledge
the history while there might be many
local opinions there might be
there’s cheese stick wars but without a
doubt
to acknowledge that they have put cheese
steak
on the map they have made cheesesteak
famous
popularized it around the world i mean
you can find cheesesteaks probably in
every major city around the world
without a doubt visiting pat’s king of
steaks
is a must when you do an ultimate
cheesesteak tour of philadelphia
now i am with a local here jail jail
what do
locals think about pat’s king of stakes
i’m gonna tell you mark so all right i’m
gonna keep it all the way real quick now
by the locals
we consider this a tourist trap a lot of
locals will tell you that
and quite honestly i don’t see it like
that i heard from
yeah as well yeah yeah when you told me
you wanted to come here
i’m like you know you might get a little
kickback from it because you know we
consider it a tourist trap we don’t
normally get our cheese sticks from here
but at the same breath like like i’ve
been telling you like they they are
i see them as something totally
different i see them as iconic to the
city
they employ a lot of these citizens here
they uh are a staple here you know when
you come over here a lot of
out-of-towners want to come over here to
get cheesesteaks
and take pictures so there’s definitely
a purpose of pets
and genos within this philly south
philly community
with that being said uh i enjoy them i
appreciate them it’s not my first uh
choice as far as cheesesteak goes but
we’re gonna get to that later i’m gonna
definitely show you some other places
in the cut some popular ones that you
must try
but this one i appreciate it’s cool it’s
cool for what it is late night two three
in the morning
you want a cheesesteak they’re open
why not and i can say right now that
without a doubt i mean all history all
biases aside i’m enjoying this
cheesesteak
you know i mean that’s what matters
right are you enjoying it i’m enjoying
it it’s your first one so you know i’m
enjoying it you don’t have
to have a clean you have a clean palette
of philly cheese steaks but if you’ve
been here for a long time
you can kind of over time tell the
difference and
pretty much build up a preference some
people don’t like their steak like this
they might like it chopped up more fine
or they might like that bread a certain
way or
okay they might like mayonnaise on there
or whatever it is you know it’s all
preference
so we but we’re going to get to all the
different other cheesesteaks while
you’re here and on that note
we should try those fries because the
fries do look incredibly good
cheese fries right cheese fries yeah
this definitely definitely gets paired
up with some cheese fries cheese fries
hmm oh yeah
i feel so guilty that was such a bad
bite
that was so good though those fries are
good
they’re salty and even when they’re
soggy with the cheese whiz they’re
crispy
it does stick to your ribs for sure
that’ll definitely stick to your ribs
wow i have to have one more bite of that
it’s like a blob of french fries and
it’s so good
okay get the cheese steak don’t miss the
fries
jale do you usually eat it with ketchup
i normally do okay but i wanted
to see i did see a lot of people eating
ketchup on it right yeah so we’ll try
that for the next
for the remainder of the cheese stick
ketchup
those fried chilies are awesome
[Music]
so again pat’s king of stakes again is
here and then
what is possibly one of the greatest
rivalries in american fast food
and one of the greatest walks across the
street that you could possibly have
we’re going across the street to eat our
next cheese steak
let’s do it let’s go yo what’s up what’s
up man
thank you i appreciate it
how many millions of times has this walk
been done
from pats to gino’s in the history of
the cheese steak
and what’s so cool is that we’re like
we’re not on a busy street
like it’s a neighborhood it’s a
community
and somehow the roads here were
perfectly designed so that there’s a
corner
for pat’s king of stakes and then kitty
corner on the other side on the other
corner
is gino’s steaks and possibly one of the
the world’s great logos
billboards neon lights with a cheese
stick
in the sky one thing that’s really dope
about genos is they got the bright
lights so
a lot of music videos get shot a lot of
people come here at nighttime
it’s photo opportunities so this is one
of the place i must say gino’s do got
that on lock so
hello can i have a mushroom cheese steak
please with provolone
yeah yes please
[Music]
thank you very much extra sandwiches
thank you appreciate it nice thank you
guys thank you for the pens gino’s
and we’re going to come over here to the
sas station the condiments after they
have the cherry peppers too
let’s load it up load it up i think from
here on okay
the one thing that we’re going to get
through this full cheesesteak
ultimate tour i think jayla and i are
gonna have to pace ourselves from for so
from here on out
we’re gonna be sharing a cheese steak oh
man if you were to do a full yourself
at all of the places we’re going to you
might not move for a week oh and this
one we got we’ve got with
mushroom and provolone which was jael’s
suggestion
oh yeah oh that’s a lot of cheese
i like their branding here though man
they have neon lights
and bright signs down to a science i
think one of the big distinguishing
factors that i read
before i mean before i’ve even tried
gino’s is that they say that
pats often has more of a frizzled
small cuts of beef shredded beef whereas
pats is known for its big
pieces of steak it’s still still very
thin
sliced but you can definitely see that
they’re big big pieces without being
chopped up so fine like you’ll see at a
lot of
cheesesteak places
oh yeah now that
is a lot of melted cheese
loaded with onions loaded with mushrooms
that smells incredible
oh yeah
with the mushrooms with the really
finely shaved
thin steak and you know you barely
notice that it’s big slices because the
steak is really tender
i love that melted provolone chase that
with the cherry chili
oh that just shot out shot juice
like a pure cheese taken away you know
what i mean like slabs of steak on here
really thin straight to the point look
i mean i’m mad at it you know i’m not
mad at it at all
so let’s finish up this cheese steak and
then we’re moving on to the next spot
yes sir
hope you’re ready for it ready
[Music]
and you know i give it up i give it up
for them i respect pat’s and gino’s for
the ogs and i see a lot of people
talking trash y’all better put some
respect on
passing gino’s name up in here you know
um a lot of y’all talk smack about them
and end up
being waiting in line after the clubs to
eat some passing genos
so i think that’s real funny a lot of
y’all talk smack about it but then you
end up in line here
juan did she say but it’s all good you
know what i mean i forgive you you know
what i’m saying all i can say is also
that i will
that was a an achievement that’s
something i have been wanting to do for
my entire life
that trek from bats to gino’s we have
done it
we can now move on to the next
[Music]
cheesesteak
all right jl next up on this ultimate
cheesesteak tour of philadelphia we are
far from the tourist trail of
philadelphia where are we at next
we are currently south philadelphia
again this is like fifth and wolf
at a corner store also known we call it
the poppy store
uh mainly just because you know it’s
really ran by like dominicans and puerto
ricans or hispanic folks but in this
case here
uh this is ran by like a cambodian owned
um a corner store but we still call it a
poppy store
you can find these on pretty much every
other block here in philadelphia they
sell everything from
phone chargers t-shirts do-rags drinks
and a cheesesteak amazing not just any
cheese some may argue this is uh some of
the best cheesesteaks they have too
and on top of that it’s fast it’s
convenient and it’s cheap it’s only five
dollars
hey all right man it’s like
any convenience store bags of chips you
can get your cup of noodles you can get
your stovetop stuffing you can get all
the beverage selections from monster
energies to
mountain dew something i think that’s
extremely cool
is that you’ll find so many different
corner stores
owned by so many different ethnicities
and nationalities
and when they all come together in
philadelphia
it’s like they embrace the culture of
philadelphia to sell cheesesteak
that’s something like awesomely unifying
yeah you can find a mexican cheesesteak
here you can i’m pretty sure they
can both find something over here indian
cheese steak indian pizza everything man
so the culture takes whatever
philadelphia is about
and they make it their own that’s
embrace it think about it you know it’s
so cool
so cool so you walk to the back and
that’s where you order the food here
so one of the the great things about
going to a corner store or poppy store
is
you pretty much already know them and
you can customize your sandwich however
you want to so
it’s not like when you go to like one of
those brand name spots and you got to
ask them can you put
not too much onions or whatever it is
over here you can tell them whatever you
want you can add bacon you can add
turkey bacon
lots of onions lots of mayo however you
want they’ll make it just right just for
you
[Applause]
so
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
all right and we’re just gonna post up
right here on the freezer
oh yeah
corner store cheese steak right here is
the five dollar holler
and is that pretty standard at corner
stores five dollars five dollars like
five dollars is the standard some places
might do it cheaper for like 350 or four
dollars
but depending on bacon on here if you
want to probably make it six bucks but
either way
if you have about five dollars in your
pocket you’re looking for a meal
poppy store gets you right you know it’s
gonna be good when you have to pull
a completely transparent piece of paper
out of it
oh yeah the drippings it’s dripping baby
oh look at that inside section the
cheese is on there
still melting that is great poppy store
cheesesteak is nice and messy that’s how
you want it to be oh
that’s the only way it’s the only way
cheers brother
[Music]
don’t sleep on this 5 sandwich right
here dude
that balance the just a
a sloppy harmony of
mayonnaise melted cheese shredded steak
those pickles is what’s really making it
for me in this
corner store specifically we’re at l m
variety
porter star locals called cj’s
known as cj’s amazing
thank you guys this is cheesesteak it’s
incredible best bang for your buck
thank you very much nice to meet you
all right that was an amazing experience
being able to support
the family that runs the corner store
that’s a great thing
about eating a cheese steak at the
corner store as well
[Music]
what would you say about this place uh
jail i’d say you can’t go wrong
if you come to philadelphia and you and
you stop by this spot right here you’re
doing something right
and is it especially common for
visitors from around the u.s for locals
what would you say this is both this is
actually touted as one of the best in
the city
it’s not considered a tourist trap and
people swear up and down by it
alessandro’s rules
your first time in philadelphia you got
to try a whiz wit
so it’s wiz cheese with onions all right
i know you like onions right that’s some
cheese steak sling
pretty much that’s pretty much you guys
yes type of phone number
[Music]
i hate that process it’s all difficult
you gotta give your phone number now
then you gotta wait to get in line to
pick up i don’t know i missed the old
days man
so the old days you could just walk in
you’ll walk right in walk through it
you get your cheese steak and continue
through you got like a nice bar right
there too
okay dollars
one second order now ready
kelvin d please get in line for the left
window
[Music]
so it ended up being more about a 45
minute wait hopefully it will be worth
it we stood in line
what’s always great about standing in
line is that number one it increases
your anticipation
and your desire to try whatever it is
that you’re about to eat and then number
two
is that you always meet cool people in
the line and talk to them about food
usually so yeah i mean i don’t look
i’ma say it alessandro’s i love y’all
but y’all ordering system is kind of
it’s it’s out of whack man you know for
me like for what i witnessed before i
know we’re going through different times
right now but that ordering system was
kind of rough i ain’t gonna lie it was
rough
i’m gonna say it for you mark it was
rough we waited a long time
thanks jail you’re all right you are i
can i can verify that jail
they do actually have a couple tables
but people are reserving them
so just a few table options but they
have a nice whole grassy park area
across the street which is
very nice
[Music]
let’s tear into this that proof
of steaming steak chopped steak and
onions
wow it’s bulging it is bulging
[Music]
the cross-section reveal the steak is
very
quite shriveled and quite fine
the the tear is quite fine but big
chunky onions
cheese whiz smells pretty awesome
[Laughter]
i mean i got my appetite for so long
[Laughter]
really soft yeah you can feel how
probably the steam of the onions
and the beef is embedded within the roll
just going to open it up so we can see
what’s inside
there’s cheese whiz there’s mayo in
there there’s
there’s um oh the the pickled chili the
chili’s in there right and that is like
one of the
the finer steak shreds that i’ve seen
really squishy
cheers cheers
oh yeah that is a lot of steak in there
whoa
you’ve got the crunch of the onions i
don’t think i tasted those chilis yet
and that cheese whiz just makes it like
so heavy
and rich it’s good i like the onions you
know
it’s a solid cheese steak you know for
me i feel like they chopped the
meat too fine but then again that’s all
preference at the end of the day so
i think you really taste the flavor of
the beef you really taste the
i actually don’t taste the chilies at
all it’s a really light chili
nothing crazy but you know it’s still a
solid cheese steak del sandros
can’t go wrong you know preference at
the end of the day
[Music]
it is pretty pretty awesomely good
though
[Music]
jl you ready for the next cheesesteak
let’s do it i’m ready for this man
i’m excited and where are we going next
next is we’re going to hit up south
street
to try out jim’s state
and so south street is looks like a
really
social street a lot of people strolling
walking up and down the street there’s a
lot of shopping there’s a lot of
restaurants
it’s a nice social atmosphere
and jim’s is one of the
one of the legendary steak cheese steaks
in in philadelphia right
yeah i’d say uh you can’t go wrong with
gyms either it’s um
it can it can attract it does attract
the crowd
but i’d say for starters if anyone wants
a philly cheesesteak
go to gyms you won’t be disappointed
situation inside the line just kind of
wraps around it really has a
diner kind of feel to it an old diner
diner style
they have some of the old photos the
vintage photos
all of the people who have been in here
signatures
snake your way around the line and
eventually get to the front where you
can see them chopping up the stake and
you make your order
[Music]
huh
they have just a massive pile of beef
going all the time
it looks like kind of the medium shred
in texture
uh but that beef is just continuously
just sizzling and boiling in its own
juices the cheez whiz move though here
is they’ve got it down
he put some at the bottom some at the
top we got it with the wiz
we got it with some peppers on the side
we’re going to go outside step outside
they have some tables where we’re going
to eat
all right here we go jim steak south
street
here we go it’s a name brand cheap this
is what i call a name brand cheese steak
you see that
got the whole logo and everything so
let’s open it up
oh yeah when you have jael has already
taught me
that when it’s when the when the wrapper
is transparent from the meat juice
that’s a pretty good sign wow
[Music]
jim stay
yeah the bread feels soft immediately on
the fingertips
man he was just flying on that cheese
whiz
there’s so much cheese in there that
it’s just stuck together i think he
actually put one layer of cheez whiz on
the bottom
and one on the top so you can feel it’s
like
glued together with cheese whiz that’s
always a good sign
some places really they just do uh one
layer on the top of cheese whiz but in
this case
they hit you with the cheese whiz at the
bottom then on the top cheers
oh yeah
it’s pretty awesomely good the cheese
whiz is just
[Music]
it’s just like melted and oozy and
sticky
within the entire cheesesteak the steak
is actually
super tender man yeah really tender i
think because the steak is so tender you
don’t even really notice the
how shredded it is because it’s so
tender the bun is very soft
has a bit of a chewiness to it but
really soft really soft buns
really soft
[Music]
i think we should load it up with the
chili soda let’s put this down
are these pickled chilies
there’s cherry peppers there’s italian
ones right yeah some kind of like a
fresh oh man
you can smell those yup
those are like chinese chili oil chilies
oh there’s some oil down there too oh
yeah i’m gonna send this through the
roof i’ve had these
fried chilies before so that oil is
gonna just burst
into the steak yeah man and that
softness of the bread
and butter those fried
crispy chilis
[Music]
it also goes down really well yeah i
smashed that dog
like that turned out to be better than
what i expect
well you know it turned out to be better
than what i remember it to be
that to me that’s how you do a legendary
cheesesteak spot right here james that
was really good
got to get the roasted peppers though to
make it game changing to me
you know why it’s so popular why it’s
one of the the main players one of the
main
legends of cheesesteak in philadelphia
i think we have made it to the end
we’ve reached the finish point of the
ultimate cheesesteak tour of

  4. Did that girl at delissandro call it pizza sauce. Certified tourist trap. Onions way under cooked. Waaayyyyyy thumbs down 👎

  5. I'm from Minneapolis and I wish to GOD we had these here . I found one years and years ago . I know it's not there anymore . If there's a place around here I don't know where it is . Tried to make em myself , turned out ok . But labor intensive . You guys are so lucky !

  6. Your videos are so fun to watch! Especially when you collab with other eaters. It’s also educational because you share some history of the origins of the food. Great food and company really are one of God’s blessings in life

  7. I can see putting sweet or hot peppers on the sandwich, but ketchup is a nono! Let the juices of the sandwich speak for itself!❤

  8. You seriously didn’t bring the man to John’s Roast Pork 😮 🤦🏻‍♂️ there you will find the best rolls and best cheesesteaks….just saying 🤷🏻‍♂️ maybe next time
