This cake was supposed to look like a wooden crate filled with fruit but instead I turned it into a big pile of Oreo-flavoured soil topped with berries.
Everything that could go wrong did go wrong. Cutting out the crate pieces from shortcut pastry was an absolute nightmare. While the baked pieces kinda looked good they were so incredibly fragile. Some of them broke, so naturally I glued them back together with royal icing which just looked sooo messy. It was also very hard to assemble the 'crate'.
I think the Oreo crumbs saved it and turned it into something different.
But the most important part is that it was quite tasty.

I’m sure it was disappointing that with all your effort the cake did not turn out as you envisioned. However, I think it looks fantastic. If someone made that cake for me I would be absolutely thrilled!
I had no idea that this cake wasn’t made as planned until I read your description..when I first saw it looked so delicious! Especially the layers with berry filling? Don’t fret friend, this cake would definitely be tasting scrumptious and looks pretty good too! 😊

Based on the picture and title, I thought you must have gotten emotional thinking about your grandma. It’s a beautiful cake. I’m sorry it didn’t go to plan. Without knowing your vision, it just looks beautiful and delicious.

You should really be proud, it looks pretty and so tasty. PLEASE don’t take this the wrong way but I find that lots of black forrest/cherry deserts tend to have the messy chic look for their decoration, with a bunch of fruit and chocolate shards on top just placed randomly to make a wonderful topping. This is absolutely great work. 🍒🤍
I’ll be honest, until I read the caption, I was under the impression you cried because it was a nostalgic or emotional experience for you. Im so sorry to read that it was a pain in the ass!
The cake is beautiful, creative, and looks very yummy. I would have never guessed anything went any way besides the right way.
