If you’re in SF you’d be able to find real wasabi at an Asian market

Honestly for basic home use and most places are using the green tinted paste anyway.
It’s perfectly fine and it’ll give the nose feeling you expect
I’ve never had real wasabi but given it’s difficulty and my location I’m not too broken hearted on it

I buy 100% wasabi powder from Amazon and then reconstitute with water. Not as good as fresh, but much better than the green horseradish stuff.

Find some Kizami – looks like a relish and in the frozen section of a Japanese market. Contains real wasabi and is a great condiment with sashimi especially
You could try and order some off amazon, but no idea what shipping does to the product. It has to be kept frozen.
CinnabarPekoe
It does contain real wasabi as the primary ingredient: [Wasabi(Japanese Horseradish), Dietary Fiber, Starch, Salt, Vegetable Oil, Sorbitol, Cyclodextrin, Flavor, Acidulant(Citric Acid), Coloring(FD&C Yellow No.5, FD&C Blue No.1) Contain : Soybean.](https://www.amazon.com/100-Wasabi-1-48-Shizuoka-Japan/dp/B08TR16D52)
“本” (hon) means real/genuine in this context.
I don’t know you well enough and I’ve not had this product before so I couldn’t answer whether it’s close enough to real (fresh, without additives) wasabi nor whether it tastes good, let alone taste good to you.

Your best bet at getting real wasabi would be to just buy a root and grate it yourself.

Tastes good, but doesn’t taste like an actual grated wasabi root. If you want the real thing ya gotta pay
Pengwulf
This is definitely better than the green toothpaste-looking wasabi powder tube ones.
amiralko
The powdered stuff is typically a bit spicier than the paste in tubes.
it’s got good wasabi flavor, which is enhanced by the sake lees it’s pickled in
TheHeianPrincess
Pretty sure I have this exact brand but in the UK it’s green packaging. If it’s the same, can confirm it’s the best wasabi I have bought, that nose tingle hits different. If not, the fact it isn’t just horseradish dyed green and is actually proper wasabi is a good sign!

It also doesn’t have any sweetener (sorbitol).
