At a wedding in California. Decided to give In-n-out another try. I’d gone 8 years ago and thought “oh this is probably what McDonald’s used to taste like” but not exceptional, just fine.
Got a double double without lettuce and ketchup+mustard (don’t like mayo based sauces, I know I’m a freak).
Anyway, it was ok. Better than sonic or similar but not very good. Am I missing something?

Watch out, the fanboys are about to lose their shit lol. Most of them aren’t just obsessed with it as a fast food option either, they legitimately think it’s the best burger around when it isn’t.
You probably didn’t like the fries. For some reason their fries suck.
Well you kinda took chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream, then removed the cookie dough (the spread) then the chocolate chips(lettuce) and said wow it’s just like vanilla whats the hype about??!!?!
Which is fine, but delayering the complete package then saying it’s not what it’s hyped up to be is silly but you’re also entitled to your own opinion and tastes (even if you did put ketchup and mustard on it you crazy person)
Also try animal style next time if you’re gonna give it another go, the grilled onions are delicious.
Controversial take: Like all foods, people’s preference for what is a “good” burger is entirely subjective…
Looks dry af
Maybe don’t go back.
i looooved in n out when i went to LA, it was fantastic. tho everyone’s opinion is technically correct cuz we’re unique individuals
I grew up on the place and love it but I wouldn’t say let whatever you saw on IG or social media or here goad you into thinking it’s something that it isn’t. At the end of the day it’s a burger spot, it’s what it’s always been, and so and so hungry for likes saying otherwise is merely that.
Once you remove the copious thousand island dressing it’s just… any other chain above McDonald’s. Like a Dairy Queen or Culver’s tier.
Its good fast food but I like making my own burgers
And thats barely……..
I have a lot of east coast friends that travel west coast and their first experience with INO is generally unfavorable. My explanation to them is that aside from growing up with this food and loving it since a kid, I can *always* rely on it to be consistent. It took me a few visits to get my taste preferences dialed in but once I did, I can always rely on it to be *exactly* what I’m craving when that urge hits. For me, no other restaurant can exactly duplicate that childhood satisfaction and carry the same taste profile into my adult life, which is what keeps me coming back time and time again.
I will fight the hell out of you
I think it’s an East Coast/West Coast thing. First, the classic In-N-Out burger is the Animal Style, which is grilled mustard and grilled onions.
That’s the burger most people rave about. It’s got a tangy, almost sour taste to it that’s awesome. If you haven’t had it that way, it’s probably like having just another burger.
I get it. Not everyone like mustard, not everyone likes onions, and not everyone likes them grilled. It’s an acquired taste.
But I’ve had the same reaction to Five Guys, which I understand started on the East Coast. It’s a decent burger, but I wouldn’t call it super great.
Same for Whataburger down in Texas and even Fatburger which got started down in the LA area like In-N-Out.
Honestly, once most chains expand beyond the first couple of stands, they tend to become very generic.
I’ll say this though, I’ve been eating In-N-Out for about thirty years and they are still pretty close to the same burger they were when I first had one.
100%
Im from the Midwest so always gets Culvers. When I visited San Fran I was impressed it was the cheapest meal around. Decent burger however the fries some of the worst I’ve had. So soggy and bland.
Idk but I see a lot more people on reddit/the internet at large that think INO is mediocre than really like it. So I’m not sure how controversial that take actually is. Personally, though, I do love me some INO. Like another commenter said, though, I don’t like the fries. But the cheeseburgers themselves are a thing of beauty.
lol you said you don’t like mayo sauces and ordered an animal fry
I think the burgers are great. I think the fries suck.
Basic I&O isn’t anything special, but a Double-Double with chopped chiles is pretty decent.
Not decent enough for me to go out of my way to hit up an I&O (was just in Dallas and didn’t bother) as the DC area has plenty of Habit Grill locations, but I’ll be in LA in August and I’ll be within walking distance of the Sepulveda location right outside of LAX.
The burgers are mid to above mid. The fries are garbage.
I’m from FL and when we were in Texas for a wedding I had In N Out every day I was there. 2 double doubles and fries had me geeking. I don’t buy into the hype, but for a good ol classic burger you can’t beat it. The price also helps lol
Depends on the location. Some are mid & some are next.
In my area, it’s fcking fantastic. The kids here are paid well so they’re happy & do a great job.
There’s always a huge line around the block. lol. Worth it but you can’t do it all the time.
Leaving out some key components screams /r/ididnthaveeggs. In your custom burger world, it’s mid, that’s fair. But you ate the burger in a way it wasn’t intended to be eaten
It is the best burger for the price. But it is a mid burger.
Your tastebuds are immature.
People like it because it’s a little less expensive and better than run of the mill fast food. The fries are literally horrible and the burgers are OK..fresh ingredients but not really that tasty. Culvers food is way better and not that much more expensive
You are not missing anything very very mid burger with great marketing it’s nothing special. I live a block away from an in and out for a little over a year now and haven’t gone once
I think the location matters. The In-N-Outs I used to frequent when I lived in Tucson were pretty great. Stopped by the one located a short distance from LAX during my layover and it was dogshit
as a native californian who has eaten my fair share of in-n-out burgers, i highly agree that they are mid. many other better options in southern california … Hodads and EZ Take Out in San Diego i would recommend to anyone wanting an excellent burger!!!! 🍔
There is truly only one great hamburger and that is the one you make at home. The second best hamburger is Whataburger. The In-N-Out Burger pales in comparison in my humble opinion.
Yours don’t look like mine lol and where is the big onion slice.. that’s why I go..
It’s definitely hit or miss.. And I don’t enjoy gambling on my food. There’s a spot called Bill’s Burgers in the SF valley I recommend.
Wow. No one’s ever been brave enough to say this. Bravo, OP
It’s very mid, it’s just a burger. It’s not bad, it’s not great. The fries are pretty much trash
You have to consider the price point. It’s pretty good value.
Its so overrated, idk if anyone here lives in bama. But Jacks shits on in an out. It just sucks its bama only
Very mid for a burger, agree. But top tier for a fast food burger.
From the midwest. While i think culvers beats it in quality, there is no better bang for your buck than in and out.
Freddy’s
Squidward: “Daring are we?”
I’ve lived in California my whole life, five guys is the best
Culver’s is by far the best burger chain in America imo, it sucks there’s none anywhere near New England
Those are good burgers Walter.
I’m not gonna bandwagon on this for the fact unlike other fast food places their quality never dropped.
I love In-N-Out. The setting. Service. Price. Taste. Healthier than other fast food options.
I’m a fan.
It’s no gourmet shit but it’s not mid dawg it’s pretty good
Are you crazy?! You’re trying to get ban around here!?
It is very mid though, but can’t beat that price in my opinion
very. its good but I wouldn’t put it Top 5
