Can anyone advise us on how to make our wedding cake look better? The bride to be isn't happy with how it turned out and wants to try to fix it. Thank you!

What happened here? Was this ordered from a professional?

To fix the proportions you’d have to completely start over, but if you just want to fix the color, you could scrape the frosting off and just redo that only.

But if you plan to DIY that, then your results will vary based on your experience and what equipment you have on hand! At the very least you’d need some tutorials, a cake decorating turntable, maybe a frosting tip to help put the colors in the right spot for the ombré, food coloring, and an icing scraper. And a frosting recipe of course.

If your only option is to DIY and this is too much to attempt, then you may be better off seeing if your florist can help you plan some florals to offset the brightness of that blue (lots of cream and white flowers along the sides of the cake, for example).

     Best of luck to you!

ETA: just saw your thread in the AskBaking sub and I think their advice to try to just cover the existing blue with more white may be a safer bet than starting completely over considering your wedding is tomorrow. But I still think your florist (if you have one) may be able to help, too. It won’t be the look you wanted, but it could improve the look of what you have. I also highly agree with everyone that you need a full refund because this isn’t even close to what you asked for. Honestly you might even want to get a plain white cake as a backup if you have time and have the florist decorate that. I’m so sorry this happened to you both but I hope your wedding goes great anyway!! Congrats!

get a new one maybe 😭😭 this is evil who did this

if you just want to fix the color, start with a thick layer of white frosting at the top and slooowwwwly taper it down to the color you want, then scrape off the excess white near the top

  4. Rabsram_eater

oh lord you paid money for this? Demand a refund. This is an awful cake, and thats a generous description. You were scammed. If it’s not too late, contact a more reputable bakeshop and see if they can do a last minute simple white cake for you, and then like put a couple flowers at the bottom.

  5. I thought this was a toilet paper roll when I was scrolling my fees.

  6. Chaos_Ice

If you’re DIYing, add another cake that’s smaller in circumference to the top. Take off the hideous icing to reuse and mix with white icing to get a better blend of colors. I’d suggest using some flowers too to cover up any blemishes.

  7. PunnyBaker

That’s a bad airbrush job. Like others said, adding fresh icing over top might help but since its airbrush it might just cover it altogether.

Id make a batch of swiss ir italian meringue icing and separate it into small bowls and color each accordingly. Then use a pallet knife to put sections on and then smooth it all out

  8. If the first pic is what she expected then she has every right to be upset and not like this cake. It’s literally soooooo far off the reference pic. This is sad, if this is for your wedding OP, I’m sorry! 🥲

  9. bwayobsessed

As a novice cake decorator I would recommend less color, more white and going for a more textured almost marbled look rather than a smooth gradient

I am so sorry! I sell cakes from my home, and I gasped when I swiped and saw what you received. You could try to DIY it as others are saying but if neither of you have cake decorating experience I really want to emphasize that it shouldn’t be too hard to get a white cake from another bakery or a supermarket if you have to, and your florist ought to be able to do something very elegant and simple, assuming they have more talent than the cake decorator. I know another commenter also said this, I really think this will be the least stressful route for you to take.  Please do demand a refund.

Put a martini umbrella on top and call it done.

  12. CandyHeartFarts

I wouldn’t be happy either it’s nothing like the one pictured.
Scrape the outer layer off and make new frosting. It’s only a *hint* of blue at the base..not the glob they’ve put on it.

  13. Dependent_Suspect_74

Are you asking how to DIY fix it? If so, scrape off the dark blue layer with a flat edge, like a butter knife. Then buy some white buttercream frosting and add some ‘splotches ‘ of white with a butter knife in different places throughout the darker areas. Then use knife to smooth out edges again and create less ‘harsh’ layers between colors. Buy some blueberries, and a bar of white chocolate to ‘shave’ curls you can place sporadically and organically. You can also use flowers to hide imperfections. If you aren’t too familiar with flowers and baking, I’d say stick to silk flowers so you don’t have to wrap stems etc.

Editing this to say I think the baker used airbrush for the color variations? If so, IMO this would make it easier to color correct as you should be able to add white buttercream and blend much easier.

  14. This looks airbrushed, you should be able to just scrape it off.

Maybe ask r/cakedecorating unless you’re going to bake a new one

  16. sweetsbaker10

Short of throwing it away and re ordering from a professional baker, I would scrape off the cake and go for a naked look. And add some fake florals.
** the cake you should’ve received needs to be at least 6 inch in height.

  17. Unhappy-Substance-86

I’m not sure if are able to get an iced vanilla cake , stack it on top? But you can scrape the color off of this one and add some beautiful flowers of your choice. If time allows it , maybe some little bits of gold leaf or edible pearls.

  18. Better_Bake1856

Okay no one is really helping you.

It needs to be taller. If you have time and can bake a couple more layers, that would be optimal. If not, here are more suggestions:

    – use something sharp and very flat. Like a putty knife (I have a specific tool for frosting this way). Hold it so the end is flush with the cake (metal end to cake). Gently spin the cake so the frosting starts to blend into the ombré you’re looking for.

    – if you want more height and can’t bake, you could try using something that isn’t food, like a cake pan, bowl, foam block, etc. as the base and make frosting to match and put the cake on top of that.

I legitimately don’t know how this person got that out of your photo. Your photo is like a blurred ombré. This is just lines of ombré color. And weird pearls on top? It would be nice if they would have been upfront about not knowing how to do it. It’s not even the right size cake pan. They should have bought the proper size of they didn’t have them.

Edit: forgot to add you’ll need more white frosting to get more of the blue out. [HERE](https://youtu.be/I-HAEbbZ_vI?si=QEldpFPn43MnzIpz) is a video of someone showing how to blend with something other than normal cake tools.

maybe get one of those scrapey things they use in tik toks to make a flat edge and add white frosting to smooth out the gradient? then buy some NON POISONOUS flowers and arrange them around the cake maybe?

disclaimer: i am definitely not a professional

  20. Sally_twodicks

And an extra tier of the same size with two more layers and re-ice that cake. No big deal, you don’t have enough height, you’ve saturated the color and have not kept smoothing enough.

It isn’t great, but it isn’t unsalvageable.

  21. OcelotTea

How on earth did someone even consider this the same kind of cake???

  22. Bake an extra layer and stack it on top of the current cake. Cover with frosting. Blend the frosting so you get one seamless cake. I don’t know why the baker didn’t notice that this cake is short and flat.

  23. b0toxBetty

Can you just get another one of those cakes and plop it on top?

  24. Easiest fix would be:

    1. Make a second cake and put it on top, this can be the same size or smaller diameter. Go for as tall as the first.

    2. Cover the whole thing in another layer of good icing, essentially whitewashing your cake. Scrape some of the previous off depending on how thick it is. Take some time and pipe it on to try and make it look semi-professional.

This won’t be what you intended, but I don’t think you have time to figure out how to do that. This should get you to a reasonable looking cake.

  25. Ok_Telephone_3013

Add sharks to it, change the wedding theme a bit?

  26. If you’re remaking the frosting use less food coloring.

If you don’t have time just add a thin layer of white over it and blend blend blend

  27. frankie_ramdayal

Get a cake from Sam’s club for the photos and use this to serve for dessert.

  28. Does your bride to be know you were posting “30m, looking for a female friend to chat with” on Reddit 3 months ago?

You need to remove the frosting. Go to a supermarket, buy another plain cake the same width to quickly build layers.

But store bought frosting. Lots of it. Buy paper straws for stability and use as dowels.

Once you’ve scraped off the original frosting on yours and the store bought cake, start stacking. Keep a bit of the blue frosting as this looks wet enough to reuse later. You only need a tiny bit.

Once stacked, start coating the outside. Only in white. You’ll need a firm flat edge to smooth it adequately.

Once smooth, smear a TINY amount of blue around the base. In fact, just dab a bit here and there. Then repeat the smoothing technique from the white frosting. The aim here is just to give a hint of blue at the base. Dab and repeat this stage until you’ve reached the desired level of blue you want.

Go to a craft store and get a silk flower for decoration. Anything will be better than the (edible glitter)??? You’ve currently got.

You shouldn’t have taken it. It’s just simply not right. And it’s not a birthday cake, it’s your wedding day! I say pull a bridezilla and make them give your money back. Unless it’s just too far past that.

  31. Signal_Blood594

Can I just say that baker clearly #nailedit 😂😩😭 and for a wedding?! A birthday or something I might laugh about it and serve it anyway but a wedding?! That just ain’t right please leave a photo review on their social or something 😬
