I’m making muffins this weekend and I wanted to top it with sugar like they do at the local bakery. These sugar grains seem larger than normal, I was wondering if there was a special “finishing” or decorative sugar, or is it just basic granulated.

We called it sanding sugar when I worked in a bakery!

Turbinado sugar is large grained too. It’s raw, so it’s brown, but it’s used the same way.

There’s definitely different types and shapes of sugars!

Sanding sugar is usually the large crystals like this, and used on top of things for decoration mainly. It also comes in colors. I’ve seen it sometimes labeled “decorative sugar.”

this sugar is the sweet equivalent of the salt grains on soft pretzels

I buy sanding sugar and sugar crystals to decorate sugar cookies. The sugar crystals are larger and add a nice crunch (and look pretty) on top of muffins and apple turnovers as well as the cookies.
