Sooo many cucumbers from my new garden so I decided to take up canning and couldn’t be more excited about it. This is my first ever batch! I just took them out of the bath, and I want to say that pickles that I’ve bought in the store don’t float. But maybe I’m crazy. Does this seem right? Does it matter?

What recipe did you use?
If you followed the recipe, and the lids popped down they should be ok. Pack them much tighter next time.
Jars should be packed a lot tighter.
Make or buy a pickle packer. It smashes a few but definitely helps fill a jar tightly.
Floating pickles is a pretty common problem, I find that they tend to kind of equalize in terms of buoyancy after they’ve been sitting for a while. You have to pack them in a good bit tighter than you think to avoid this. If the ones at the top are sticking out of the brine they might discolor a bit but they’re still okay to eat, just a little less appetizing.
