Hello all, I’m new to water bath canning and one of my lids came out bent. I wasn’t expecting this. How did i manage to do this? Any advice would be appreciated!

Finger tight, not as tight as you can. I’ve been seeing this on here a lot lately, people are getting really strong, it seems. The jar needs to form a vacuum. That means air has to escape during processing. If you tighten the band so hard the seal has no give, you will get this happening. To tell the truth, I’ve wondered about this for years, wondering if I were tightening mine correctly, I guess I was.

Is there any sort of torque spec on what “finger tight” means? My fingers are much stronger than my wife’s, so it seems too vague.
