Got “gifted” a grill with my new apartment. Is it salvageable?

Yes, but I would much rather invest cash in something new than invest the cash and elbow grease needed to resurrect that hot mess.

That same grill is $200 brand new at Home Depot right now.

It’s a shit show. Trash it. Get a new one

I’d hit the lid with a wire brush to knock off any loose rust. Then clean the grates with a good grill brush, it should take off the rust and gunk. Load it with charcoal and put some oil on the grates to start seasoning the bare metal that was rusted. Grill and eat.

It’s not that bad, and yep everything is salvageable that’s metal. It just has to be worth it to you and you have to have the time. You can reuse resources to fix it up as well!

That’s trashed. Go grab a weber kettle or something

Realistically $20 bucks at your local Wally World for a stainless steel wire brush, some sandpaper, a can of oven cleaner and a can of high heat spray paint would get this grill worked into shape and useable in a few hours time. It could look nice if you take your time sanding and repainting. Whether or not you want to undertake the project is another thing. I personally would rather scour marketplace and pick up someone’s old Weber for sub <$100.

you have to be dirt poor to try to salvage that thing

Nexgrill isn’t worth it. That metal is so thin. Might puncture a hole trying to scrape the rust clean.

Don’t polish a turd. Go on marketplace and find something better. Throw that thing out.

    Dafuq? That’s a $150 grill… new. Dump it.

I have the same grill. They are ok. And yes all you have to do is clean it

With enough resources and money I could salvage the Titanic. Doesn’t mean it’s worth it.

Clean it out, heat it up, and scrub with a wire brush. That thing still has some grilling in it. But when you’re ready to splurge, I picked up an extra Weber kettle for $40 locally on an online marketplace.

If the bottom ain’t rusted out it’s doable. Just a power wire brush and some hitemp krylon; easy peasy.

I’m not sure why everyone is saying to scrap it. I mean, the grate looks to be usable and not too oxidized. If you’ve got a bit of money to throw around, you might want to buy a new one, but this should do fine after like an hour or two’s worth of cleaning.

I’d use wire brush on the bottom parts but just get new grates. You shouldn’t use metal brushes on grates (people have eaten wire bits that have torn up their insides). I’d just get some new ones though—they’re cheap.

Chimney and charcoal underneath worth more than the grill

Just needs a little fresh coat of paint and a little cleaning 😉

Absolutely.. a lot of wire brush scrubbing.. but a new rack .. season it.. I would weld a new bottom.. high heat new paint .. good as new

  21. i_thewalrus

But that might not be worth it unless you’re short on cash .. cause Amazon has those same grills for like 100$

  22. 2based2cringe

Looks like you’ve got a lil grill on your rust my man

  23. schousta

Clean the grates, remove loose rust from the lid and use it. As soon as it breaks, get a new one.
Why invest time and money on things that don’t touch your food?

  24. FungalEgoDeath

Salvageable? That’s a fully operational and perfectly fine grill my dude!

Nah it’s not worth the hassle imo. Look on Facebook yard sale
