MacKenzie Room (Vancouver, BC)

  1. Just came back from a….food marathon of a trip in Vancouver, eating some of the most delicious seafood and salmon.  Probably will go back at some point to revisit some places (Fanny Bay for oysters) and try new places (maybe St. Lawrence, when I’m not going to Paris soon).

     ————————–

    1. Menu of the day.
    2. Showstopper Salad – Good opening cleanser with a house-made cheese similar to ricotta.
    3. Chicken of the Sea – toasted brioche was SO good.  The pate mixed with sea urchin was kind of a mixed bag but pretty good.  The uni was lost in the pate but it sweetened up the pate very subtly.  Wish the urchin came out stronger.
    4. Garden State – was really good with a chilled smoked tofu at the bottom.  Would say this was better than the showstopper
    5. Les Faux Tartare – a really good mixed beef tartare.  For those in LA, it reminded me of the Destroyer Beef Tartare.  Good mix of beef and seasoning to blend it all together, but I’m not sure if I prefer Destroyer over this one.
    6. Pierre Elliot Crudo – this was one of the less memorable dishes partially because everyone is doing a take on a Hamachi crudo at this point.  It was good and blended well together.
    7. -Missing Pic- Straight out of Comte – the blend of a roasted fingerling potato with endives, figs and comte made it reminiscent of a good mashed potato/baked potato that was sweetened a bit with the figs.
    8. Pic 7 – Hidden Gem – Normally, I do not like cooked salmon but this was a quick sear on both sides of king salmon that was just cooked so deliciously that I am tempted to try to do something similarly at home.  Definitely one of the tastiest of the night.
    9. Pic 8 – Nduja Believe – Halibut that was also cooked to perfection, between this and the salmon, its SO hard to choose between which one was the best dish of the night.  This dish I could just eat all day with that nice creamy vichyssoise that blended SO well with the nduja oil and the broccolini.  Starting to salivate thinking about this.
    10. Pic 9 – Down the Rabbit Hole – Rabbit that was wrapped so it was similar to a mortadella.  It was super light but kinda just tasted like a chicken breast with the moisture of a chicken leg in a really good way.
    11. Pic 10 – The Full English – at the point of the meal, both the rabbit and lamb dish, we were super full that we honestly could have been happy with the meal.  This was the heaviest of the night, not as gamey as expected from lamb but it worked all together.
    12. Pic 11 – Pink Chiffon – I haven’t had too many rhubarb based dessert other than pies, but this worked out very well.  The dish itself was familiar because it was a chiffon caked (also soaked in tequila) but that enhanced everything really well.
    13. Pic 12 – Pear Necessities – I would rate better than the Pink chiffon, but basically spiced pear paired (pun intended) with a ferro rocher (to put it simply).  It was tasty and a good way to end the meal.

We ended up going to Kissa Tanto the night before and they had one single stand out dish and a solid drink/beverage program but Mackenzie Room? ohhhh boy….with the pricing and the amount of food we got and how delicious it was, I actually want to go back to MacKenzie room when they change their menu.  Some of the dishes I could definitely eat all day but the highlights included Chicken of the Sea, Nduja Believe and Hidden Gem.

This restaurant is criminally underrated and definitely one of the better restaurants in Vancouver and I would highly recommend this one to anyone going to Vancouver who wants an amazing/delicious meal that does highlight a lot of local ingredients (salmon and halibut *drools).  I originally got the recommendation on this reddit and I think the Vancouver reddit as well.

By the way…..maybe criminally under priced as well which makes it even more amazing to go to, it was 89$ CAD / $70.31 USD per person before drinks, tax and tip.

  2. Hope you enjoyed it! My favourite restaurant in the city. It’s so underrated it’s nuts.

  3. Absolutely love seeing Vancouver spots here by the way, if anyone is ever coming I keep my own recommendation list I’ll share with anyone who wants it. I only rank those I’ve been to but I’ve been to a really good chunk of spots.
