There's been a lot of discussions about soil, rightfully so. So I'm doing an experiment. Pole beans, half in my own composted cow manure and half in big box garden soil. The plants at top of the photo are in "garden soil". The plants in the bottom are in composted cow manure. Aged 2 years.
The tree stump is just a tall stump for them to grow up.

Just being devils advocate and I believe you but the soil in the picture looks the exact same all around , and maybe the tree is blocking some sun at certain parts of the day

While I think compost will win in most cases, it’s possible that drainage of soil could help with certain plants. Weather varies each year so that can also affect which one’s better in a given year.

    Good luck experimenting.

I’ve done a home experiment as well and the difference is staggering. Not that my methods would pass scientific scrutiny but it’s enough that I’d never go back and it makes me far more willing to put the extra work in my compost piles to hurry them along.

How come you did a big box soil and not Black Kow or whatever cow manure compost that is available?
