Hi, new to canning. I’m barely going to start my canning journey and decided to start with some fruits, so ordered some 32oz ball jars wide mouth. They arrived today but I inspected the jars and realized they have some scratches that are deep enough to be felt if I pass my nail on them and most of them have them. Should I be concerned? Are they fine for canning with them? Should I ask for an exchange or return? Thanks

Are you sure those are scratches and not just lines of thicker glass? I’ve seen these on a lot of mason jars but they are more like imperfections that are kind of like seams in the way that they are thicker than the rest of the glass.

are they scratches or a cosmetic defect in the glass I really can’t tell which from the picture.

The zoomed in view is pretty bad. The scratch isn’t the only imperfection, I am seeing pretty bad rippling and some air bubbles.

It may be a bad batch or is it possible these are counterfeit?

  5. What brand are these jars? And where did you purchase them? If you have the choice, stick with the trusted brands like Ball, Bernardin, Golden Harvest (and maybe avoid Amazon since they’ve had issues with fake Ball lids being sold).

Keep in mind that canning jars are made of molded glass so you will have some seaming that’s built in and maybe some waviness. If it’s not chipped and it’s from a canning brand (these look like Ball) you should be fine. Typically the thing you look for is chipping on the top because that can affect the lid from having a complete seal.
