Finally got the chance to cook a nice steak for pops. Went and picked up a couple prime ribeyes from the farmers market, reverse seared them to what I thought was a pretty solid medium rare. The first thing he does is mention it’s raw and that he can’t eat it. Got him to try a bite and he threw the rest of his steak on my plate, I didn’t hear the end of it for the rest of the night. I will definitely reconsider making the family dinner next time I get the opportunity. So what do you guys think, too raw, perfect, or cooked too much?

I mean, I get it. I prefer my steak medium rare, but some people are legitimately turned off by the color and texture. My mom finally had enough with me pressuring her and showed me how badly it made her gag. They don’t like their steak that way- just make it well done for them. It’s not hurting you and it’s a silly reason not to cook for family.

Ask your mom if she stepped out 9 months before you were born, and hope the answer is yes. If that’s your real dad change your last name…

That steak looks perfectly cooked. I’ll take your dad’s share if he doesn’t want it!

Your steaks are medium rare which is perfect for modern steaks.

Older generation erred on overcook food as access to refrigeration was new, expensive, or non-existence for rural area. This overcooking food ensured all bad bacteria killed during cooking. By cultural and old habit, anything is not welldone is generally consider as undercooked by older generation.

Jokes aside – how does your dad like HIS steak? Most of the time, saying a steak is “raw” is because it wasn’t done enough for that particular person. Like, I’d eat what you’ve presented, but I’m also a medium rare guy and would say that’s closer to rare than medium.

It’s closer to rare than medium rare. You should have made the steak closer to what your dad actually likes honestly.

What does it matter what the internet thinks? You were cooking it for your dad, did you not think to ask him how he likes his steak first?

To everyone telling me I should have asked my dad how he wanted his steak, I learned to eat and cook them medium rare from him. He was just having himself a night, the lighting was bad, and sometimes he just likes to critique. Edit: Mom was out of town but she gladly eats my medium rare steaks I present her with every day of the week. Gonna dedicate the prime cut to her next time. I’m just living in a parallel universe as of late I guess.

  9. I’ll be your new dad. Your steak is perfect, son.

The generation that proceeded us don’t like flavor in their food in general. My parents would that same steak with little seasonings to well done and see nothing wrong with it lol.

Should have popped it in the microwave a bit for him

  12. I would eat up the steak you posted happily. That said, cooking a steak for someone else is not about you. Some people want blue, some want well done. It doesn’t matter what you think is perfect when cooking for someone else.

  13. Steak is definitely under. You can still see the line of white fat. This is definitely rare and not a medium nor a medium rare, as the meat is so thick getting a MR would take longer than expected. You coulda cooked it a lil more and test the meat before cutting by touching the top of the meat and checking how “jiggly” it is. It’s gotta be firm and not squishy if u want a cooked meat.

the perfect way to cook a steak is the way that the person eating it wants it done

ask your dad how he wants his steak done, then do it that way.

There’s no blue in these pictures. No blue = not rare. Any pink = varying levels of medium temps. Brown = well done.

Like you said though sounds like your dad was just having a day. Hope it works out and you all can share a steak again in the future.

You don’t have a dad, you’ve got two moms.

  17. jaygabriel99

Dad also probably asked for some ketchup for it once it was returned well done.

  18. Weird that you have a little girl for a father.

That first photo? I agree with your dad!!

My Dad would think this steak was raw as well. Last month we went to my Aunt’s favorite steakhouse as a memorial. He ordered her favorite steak – filet – butterflied and well done. We told him he didn’t need to get it cooked the way she did. His reply was “This is how I order my steak.” I died a little inside.

    🤷

Sounds like your dad should’ve chilled about the steak afterwards but if he likes his steak done more than that then thats how he likes it and that’s the end of it. If he wants a steak and a steak cooked to a certain temp either he cooks his own damn steak or you cook it to how he likes it if you’re wanting to cook one for him. I know this isn’t popular around here for some fucking reason but people are allowed to have their steak the way they want it so they can also enjoy their meal.
