Natto. Fermented soy beans. Some people like them, some don’t. It’s something most people have to try to develop a taste for.
No idea how it tastes. I can’t get past the appearance of the texture, which reminds me of some kind of alien creature’s eggs. (I was forced to watch a LOT of “B-rated” movies as a kid.)

It tastes very funky to me, like blue cheese. I love it

I just got back from a month in Japan, and was able to finally try it on a few occasions. If you like soy it’s fine. Mild, no funk as I thought it would have. It looks funky but tastes good, a nice part of a Japanese breakfast.
All_Japan
They are awesome and very nutritious! I eat the for breakfast every morning.
Ronin_1999
Probably one of the most cherished foods in Japanese culture that is also the most polarizing food everywhere else on the planet.
It’s packed with umami, with this crazy thick sticky texture that is an integral part of the dish, to the point that the more of that feel, the better it is considered.
I eat it often over rice with strips of nori to scoop it all up.
BONUS: it’s a natural blood thinner!

You can buy a pack of 3 for like $3.50 at Tokyo central in the frozen section, so even if you hate it, it doesn’t break the bank. If you’re willing try it, eat with rice and pair with an egg (I like sunny side up topped with soy sauce but tamagoyaki is more traditional) and miso soup for breakfast!
Or on top of cold soba noodles and soup base with green onions for lunch
Fragrant-Leg1565
Natto, it’s fermented soy beans and tastes somewhat like yeast, the same funky smell

Natto is amazing, first time has been described to me like something smelly but I loved since first bite, last year in Kyoto I even had dinner in a Natto restaurant where I ate a degustation menu made with Natto. Amazing food
patrickthunnus
Very mild flavor, often served with mustard.
If your palate isn’t geared towards umami then I’d advise skipping it.

I’ve tried natto once and I honestly hated it.

Flavor is pretty good, smells awful and the texture is pretty tough for me. Not something I’d eat regularly, but I can understand why people like it.
Tokyo_Elusive-love
Having tried it several times, it’s not the taste of natto that I think would throw people off, but the almost snot like consistency.
DuckDuckStones
Natto is actually very good and healthy for you. They usually come with a little sauce packet and sometimes mustard and they are delicious.

Thanks for reminding me to add Natto to my International Supermarket list!

When i tried it the taste reminded me of beer- the best i can describe it is yeasty lol. The texture threw me off, for some reason i thought it would be like a soft bean, but it was harder, akin to the texture of chickpeas but with slime. Im sure people who like it will describe it differently but thats my take
zestzimzam
i couldn’t do it! i like fermented bean paste (doubanjiang, ssamjang, miso), i’m also ok with slimy textures (love okra/ladyfinger) but natto was a step i couldn’t take.
LavanderClem
One of my favorite food in the morning, with a little bit of mustard and soy sauce served with white rice. It’s actually very good for your health.
The beans kinda taste like coffee.
SkillPatient
The flavor is good, the texture is the trouble.

Natto, fermented soy beans. A delicacy and a heaven sent when you’re hungover!

If you ever want to try the taste without the slime, they make Furikake that is made from dried Natto. There is also Natto that is designed to have less smell from other Natto varieties. It’s good on rice, sometimes I like making a peanut butter sandwich, natto, and purple cabbage and carrots.
briandemodulated
If you can get past the texture of natto it tastes earthy and quite pleasant.
gut-symmetries
The taste is fine, it’s the texture for me. If you like the texture of chia, or raw egg white in rice, this will pose no problem.

I would never lol

Didn’t realize how nutrient-dense this stuff is. Tons of magnesium, potassium, fiber, and protein. Might have to try it out.

Natto. Fermented beans that are put over a bed of rice.
imselfinnit
A fantastic source of Vitamin K which is needed for blood related magic.
LiquidDreamtime
I’ve had it three times (bought a frozen 3 pack).
It was revolting imo. I can usually really get down with some funky foods and interesting textures/consistencies, but this wasn’t it for me.
I tried it a few ways and it just tastes off to me. I’ll give it another go some day, hopefully I can find what folks love about it.

Natto. Small beans with a nutty/bean taste and slimy consistency similar to okra.
[Natto](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natt%C5%8D). It’s fine. I frequently have it over rice with scallions for breakfast
