After months of devouring hotsauces and prepping for this moment it finally came. I ate an entire reaper off our plant today. Was kind of a personal challenge/dare.

Took a good minute before the heat kicked in, and then it got worrisome very fast. It was like having a legitimate firball in my mouth. Worst part was mine was the heat was trapped in the back of my throat instead of a nice mouth coat and burn. Have never ever eaten something that burned like that before.

We will see how the stomach fairs the next 24hrs. I drank an Banana yogurt peanutbutter smoothie before and after, so crossing my fingers.

And no I didnt not let my cat taste. I knew she wouldn't lick or taste it, she just likes to take sniffs of my food. Shes very particular when it comes to human food.

Also bonus photo of the reaper next to a scorpion if you are curious.

  1. I bought a reaper plant a few years ago, just so I could say I grew them… I try to grow something odd every year. Conversation piece, if you will.

I kept it alive for 3 seasons. Put it in the garden, dug it up before the first frost and carried it in/out for 3 years.

I only did it because I wanted to try one- but I never grew the lady balls to try it lol The one person I knew crazy enough to try one had already eaten a whole one at work, and he said “Absolutely hell F’kin naw I’m not doing it again”. I ended up scraping the plant. I will say, I did make pepper jelly (about 6 pints total) with a tiny sliver of a reaper that was AMAZING and everyone raved about how good it was. I just can’t imagine eating a whole pepper, thank you for confirming I made the right decision!

  2. Fresh peppers have a habit of spraying oil into the back of your throat. I did the same thing with a random chili plant my mum got me, i think they were thai chilies. That part sucked, but the chilies were delicious.

Please don’t let your cat near super peppers lol, spicy food is a lot more painful for them

    Respect the pepper! Respect! It!

I ate a scorpion pepper one time that I had in some cherry tomato and garlic confit. It was amazing for about 9 seconds. So damn spicy! Had a nasty stomach ache. Hot in hot out. I’ll probably do it again.
