Out of the major chain restaurants, I think Longhorn does steak better than most.

The only 3 national chains I have been to are Longhorn, Texas Roadhouse and Outback.

I have Longhorn and Texas Roadhouse tied in the lead and then Outback is 1000000000 steps below those two.

    Looks good!

  2. Where I am at the road house doesn’t even come close to longhorns,I love getting the porterhouse when I go to longhorns, honorable mention to the bread

Here to take a stand against this Texas Roadhouse slander still looks good tho😂😂😒

  4. ChetdyKrueger

Yes AND those brussel sprouts are fuckin hitters !

  5. i rank the chains

    2. longhorn
    3. outback

texas Roadhouse moved up to honorable mention for me after ruby Tuesday and ocharlies went out

I got the 20 oz outlaw ribeye at Longhorn and was shocked at the quality and how well it was prepared. I asked for it to be done on the flat top not on the grill FYI.
Huge baked potato and great Caesar salad all for $32.
    Big fan!

Our Longhorn’s must have bad line cooks. Our steak had no flavor. Although, the last time I went to our Texas Roadhouse, I ended up with a plate of fat and barely any meat. Guess it may be a toss up at this point for me.

Now the Texas de Brazil, that’s a different level. I’ll walk out of that place with the meat sweats.

  8. Where I’m at, longhorn absolutely blows Outback out of the water. My local longhorn nails it every time.

Outback used to be the gold standard chain steak house (growing up, it was Steak and Ale). Now it’s not bad for a work lunch but not worth going to for a “good steak”

I have never once had a decent steak at Longhorn. The couple times I walked into a TX Roadhouse, it smelled like old beer and dirty rags. I remember having good steaks at Outback… in the 90s when we’d go as kids because they wouldn’t card us, we’d get shitfaced, and eat steaks not knowing what a good steak was.

That steak there *looks* okay. The lack of a money shot is telling though.

Longhorn used to sell their prairie powder at the store. That and a pat of butter was my whole steak recipe for years (one hour dry brine, cook to medium rare, slap a pat of butter on top.

I’m currently trying to replicate their prairie powder.

The one thing I will say is that they are definitely consistent.. And I’ve never left disappointed.

When both are at their best, I think Longhorn’s steak beats Texas Roadhouse. I also love their tenders and parm crusted chicken.

Consistency wise, I think Texas Roadhouse has Longhorn beat. It’s rare I get a bad meal from TX Roadhouse

For me, Longhorn is the best chain low-level steak restaurant. They taste (good seasoning) good to me and I like their sides and desserts.

The Longhorn lunch menu is my secret when I want to do a lunch with someone.

  16. Texas Roadhouse for me for basics while traveling: cinnamon butter and rolls, ribeye, potatoes. Longhorn when I want the whole wheat bread loaf, stuffed mushrooms, ribeye, and the whole nine. The consistency is there for both restaurants.

Steak looks great but I want to do a eulogy for those brussel sprouts

I’ve never had an even halfway decent steak at Longhorn. They are normally cooked to the right temperature but somehow always dry as all hell on the inside. My old roommate used to love them, so we would go regularly, but it was always the same for me no matter what cut I ordered. They did a decent pork chop, though, so there’s that.

  19. ITSNAIMAD

That looks great. For me it’s sizzler. Sizzler has a great ribeye. Always tender and flavorful. I order mine rare and expect to get it medium rare lol.

  20. Texas Roadhouse (TR) is better in my opinion and seems to be the shared sentiment with those I’m around. Longhorn is really good as well, but we don’t eat there as often anymore. Their prices have gone up significantly, so there’s no point paying more when I can get something better at TR.

We use to alternate just for a change of scenery and some menu items.

The only experience I’ve had with Longhorn is with the one near my house and it was absolutely awful. I’ve never had a bad steak at Texas Roadhouse.

  22. Cowboytroy32

Try capital grille! Same company with a little bit of a higher price tag but as someone who has worked in the kitchen for both they are similar but I put Cap grille above them

  23. wordswiththeletterB

Lmao. The post on r/kitchenconfidential would have me second guessing this

  24. the_dark_viper

It varies from location to location with Longhorn. However, I have never had a bad steak at Texas Roadhouse.

  25. probablyseriousmaybe

Damn, what does the cook have against those Brussels sprouts

  26. Polairis44

They’re mostly location based. I think they all vary so much.

  27. I’ve had bad steaks at Longhorn. Never at Texas Roadhouse

  28. I agree – longhorn is way better than roadhouse.

  29. BODHi_DHAMMA

I’ll take the old school TAD’s Big Daddy steak in NYC over the nowadays Outbacks!

Ah, memories. Lol. Fuck I’m old.

Had Texas Roadhouse for the first time in a while recently and it was actually pretty good for the price; I got a 16 oz. sirloin + fries + loaded mac & cheese (the steak comes with 2 sides but making the mac loaded cost a bit extra) for ~$25. Steak had little fat, the fry side was ample, and the mac & cheese was great. Really recommend going there.

Why is that pool of liquid white-ish? I’ve never seen that. The only thing I can think is cold fat, but that wouldn’t make since on a freshly cooked steak.

Edit: immediately realized after posting, it’s probably butter

  32. Comfortable-Dish1236

I like a NY strip Pittsburgh medium-rare. Out of Texas Roadhouse, Outback, Saltgrass or Longhorn, the only one that can consistently plate a perfectly charred medium-rare steak is Longhorn.

    In my opinion.
