Hi.

My first post ever after "stalking" the sub for a while. Good content and discussions so far.

The French movie director Pierre Deschamps who made the documentary "Noma: My Perfect Storm" in 2015 recently started a vile attacks on the Copenhagen food scene, see screenshot. I can only speculate on his agenda.
As a Copenhagen resident and food lover living here for 25 years I'm both biased and totally indifferent but what do you think? Are Copenhagen restaurants overrated, overpriced, boring (whatever that means)?

PS: I realise that this being my first post it might come out a bit "trolling" but believe me I'm only curious. And hopefully soon I'll be posting some Copenhagen opinions and pics, but 1) Restaurants have been shut down for the summer holiday 2) I'm super lazy.

PPS: In another post he claims that croissants in Copenhagen have no soul which I believe is the most French insult I've ever heard 🙂

  1. I think if say he’s vile and has an agenda, it’s clear what your opinion is too.

I think Pascal would have to explain why he holds the opinion he does, since just going by the screenshot there’s not much of substance in that one short comment.

Personally, I have no doubt that there’s amazing food in Copenhagen, but I also think that Scandinavian cuisine (along with Japanese) is the trendy cuisine of the last 10 years or so, and it’s possible that Pascal is reacting to the trend rather than the food itself

  2. I think Copenhagen has one of the best culinary scenes in the world, but maybe I’m just a simple rube whose only done fine dining in twenty-some countries.

Copenhagen fine dining (i.e. Michelin restaurants) is objectively very expensive compared to what you get for your buck in most other places.

Does that make it overly expensive? I dont think so. Does it make it over rated? Maybe, I guess. But since the post you shared doesn’t really explain the *why*, I guess its really just bait.

To be clear: Am from Copenhagen and have been to a few of the good places here, plus the odd Michelin restaurant abroad. My general finding is the ‘traditional’ fine dining French cuisine restaurant is far more boring than any high end place in Copenhagen.

I liked the food in Copenhagen but didn’t find a strong wow factor to any of it, flavor wise. I think overall the style of the region’s food is simple, clean, fresh, orderly… which can be lovely and delicious, but not bold or omg give me ten more.

  5. It’s expensive sure like SF or NYC levels of price. I didn’t think the food there was ‘boring’ – maybe not as flavorful or my personal preference in style of cuisine, but it’s at least interesting.

He’s going to have to write something serious about his opinions if he wants to be taken seriously.

This looks like something you’d see on Reddit actually.

I’m Danish and live abroad for a decade and have eaten around the world so I do have some comparative experience.

We have really really good restaurants – And bad ones.

    So do other countries.

It’s all down to what you personally like more – But to say our dining scene is downright trash is just farming for engagement obviously.

I think other places are flying under the Radar and are offering a better value (netherlands/belgium for example). Some of the more interesting places are outside the big cities and wont geht much hype because its inconvenient to get there.
Copenhagen ist also lucky that christensen bankrolls Restaurants for fun.

I followed dua lipa’s instagram recommendation and had the best chicken sandwich of my life at Poulette in norrebro. I’m not a social media person, but it did work in that case.

i mean i will say the mid tier restaurants i tried in copenhagen were awful IMO, but the fine dining, cheap food and the bakeries were amazing.

  10. Copenhagen is expensive and there is tourist traps along some of its restaurants. With that said, I have had some of the most amazing food in each end of the “price range” in Copenhagen. I haven’t tried that much fine dining, but if you know your stops among the other end (or middle) of the spectrum, you can definitely find some absolute gems!

Copenhagen is not overrated, it’s got quite literally one of the best food scenes in the entire world. I wouldn’t take anyone serious if they didn’t think so, because some of the most innovative restaurants are in Copenhagen right now

My wife and I were just in Copenhagen. We really enjoyed the food. My wife has Celiac, and we are generally vegan, but went vegetarian for the trip. We really enjoyed the pastries and bakeries. Every restaurant was very friendly to Celiac which isn’t always the case. We ate at Noma, which is what the trip was centered around, and it honestly didn’t live up to our expectations. It was disappointing because we’ve wanted to go for years and never thought we could make it. So I’d say Noma might be overrated. We absolutely loved dinner at Ark though!

A lot of Danish pastry is pretty garbage compared to what you can find after 30 minutes on a train to Sweden.
