those of you familiar with chicago’s food scene probably know valhalla from their time in time out market. the other day i dined in their new space in wicker park (a dimly lit, intimate chef’s counter of about 20 seats) and was really pleased with the experience. the FOH staff were spectacular – very friendly and attentive.

as for the food: first, given the name, there was a surprising dearth of nordic or scandinavian influences. the menu, which came wax-sealed with a letter opener, was actually mostly east asian flavors. this was not to its detriment tho the food was delicious. i especially liked the fluke dish – delightfully light and tart and tasted like summer, as well as the arroz caldo (basically crab lugaw). the drinks were also very inventive and fun. my only critique would be that there were a lot of fried dishes – i did not mind too much because i like fried food but it may be too heavy and filling for some. it feels like they are def going for a star and i wouldnt be surprised if they end up getting one soon

Have you been to their time out location? If so how does it compare to the new restaurant? I see a lot of the same dishes I had at the old location and I can’t say that I would recommend it to anyone.
