Spontaneously decided to try a newly discovered donut place this morning.

The spot is a bit tucked away, so if you never travel through this part of Fulton, you’d never know it existed (I didn’t know either despite working nearby, but I was just Googling “doughnuts near me” and stumbled across it).

I can’t speak for the coffee (Metric Coffee), but I think these donuts deserve to be in the discussion of “good doughnuts” among the other popular spots. They are incredibly soft and Brite does unique flavors, although only 4 options to choose from today.

I paid $5.50 for the horchata donut and $3.50 for the brown butter banana donut. Prices are in line with most places.

I still think Beacon and Doughnut Vault are a level or two above most places in the city, but these are certainly worth a try, especially if you want to try a new coffee spot.

How was the brown butter banana donut?

  2. Maybe Brite is back. When they first started making donuts, they were great. But then they fell way off. Like the last 2+ years the donuts have been horrible. I got the sense that there’s been a lot of turnover, which is positive as whoever was making the donuts recently had no idea what they were doing.

Made a special trip out there just for a donut about a year ago. They looked great in the pics but I was pretty disappointed. They pastry itself was very dense and chewy and only a very thin glaze. I thought of it as the kind of donut that takes itself too seriously and end up being no fun. I guess when I bite into a donut I want to think it’s party time. These look great though. Probably time to revisit.

You’ve stumbled upon what is arguably the best coffee in Chicago (black coffee, I can’t speak for milky drinks). I’ve liked the pastries there as well. Lost Larson is my fave in the city.

Not sure about the donuts, but Brite has been bringing croissants (top shelf in the photo) to a French-style street market in Oak Park this summer. And those are extremely good.

  6. I love this place! They have one of the best matchas in the city.

But why…*why* …tamper with the perfection that is kouign amman? Matcha detracts. Or maybe their kouign amman just isn’t that great to begin with.
