This bakery is charging $3 per macaron… Is this texture normal?

That texture doesn’t look right to me. It looks like they haven’t used finely ground almonds, or they haven’t sifted the dry ingredients enough. They look like my first effort at macarons, and those were the mistakes I made.

$3 is cheap for a macaron where I live, so I’d probably try one. I wouldn’t pay more than that, though.

I make macarons, these don’t look as smooth as mine but like another poster, I’d try a few flavors for $3.

Amateur baker here. (<year). I would chuck these in the bin.

Looks like a case of not using/making finely ground almonds and not enough macronage. I don’t consider the former to be that big of a deal though.

They do look a bit small and cheap on the filling

As a hobbyist baker I see an epidemic of macaron shops selling sub-par macarons for premium prices. If I can bake a better macaron at home then it’s not worth the price they’re selling them for. I’ve experienced way more bad or meh macarons than good.

  6. Maybe they ground their own almonds? That’s the most charitable reason I can think of for this texture.

I would be embarrassed to sell those at all.

I’m not a professional baker by any means however, I’ve baked a lot of macarons throughout the years and I can say that’s not the usual look/texture of a macaron. If my macarons came out like that, I would not sell them and just give them away instead. It looks like the almond flour (if that’s what they’re using) wasn’t sifted and the macaronage process wasn’t done properly to reach the “ribbon” stage. There could be other factors too but typically thats not how they look

Are you sure they are French macarons? There is a Greek version, amygdalota, whose texture looks very much like this. They don’t taste exactly like macaroons but they are amazing nonetheless.

I’m actually curious about the taste, maybe they are onto something new. Sometimes when things look worse, they taste better.

These look terrible and I would say so to the manager. I couldn’t imagine being proud enough to actually put them out.

A bakery near where I am calls them Ugly Macarons. Intentional or their way of lowering our expectations, I don’t know.

  13. Wouldn’t buy those for that price. They sell frozen ones here for about .75¢ each

If they are vegan maybe. If they are not they look bad. Where I am currently I can get perfect looking macarons for like 1.5 USD.

I would have to buy one to see if the taste makes the price reasonable. Some of the best things I’ve eaten looked awful…

Nope. Don’t bother wasting your money. $3 for a macaron with the texture of a country road? You can do better.

No it’s not. Traditional French macarons usually involve an entire series of steps to prevent the bumpy texture, and get a beautiful smooth finish. They are cutting corners yet still want to charge for it.

I’ve seen better, although admittedly kinda broken, for one dollar. Haven’t tried them though. I’m just talking about the appearance of the texture

  19. eviemay1991

That doesn’t look right. They should have a smooth slightly glossy top

My local bakery sells 7 macarons for $5 and they look impeccable. I see no value here.

  21. Maybe it’s intentional? Like out of 5 bakeries I visit I will remember these funky macarons. Every other smal business already tried everything else: colour, flavours, etc. It’s different for sure. Plus, I’m personally a sucker for everything “rustic”. I would buy this to try it out, no regrets. 😅 I mean if they use “homemade, fresh, raw” marketing. I would fall for it. 3$ is even cheap, depends where you are located.
