Odd sizes aside… first time trying this worked about as I expected. At first I wanted to roll one without Nori so I can bring the roll and Nori to campus with me for lunch and the nori wouldn’t be soggy. However, I also read Gimbap should be rolled hot. Let it be known that was a complete fail. Then I proceeded to roll them with the half sheets of nori I had and those worked better. But they were too big to cut into 4 pieces and too small to cut into 5 pieces. I’ll try again at some point but can anyone give me tips on making food with seaweed for packed lunches? Onigiri, Onigirazu, Sushi rolls, Gimbap, etc… I can’t figure out how to make them in advanced without the nori getting soggy and oddly stretchy. Unfortunately, this also took me 2 hours.

    You did great.

Let the rice cool before using. So yes “hot” but not literally. More like with freshly made rice vs yesterdays you would use for fried rice.

In Korea they also LIGJTLY coat the roll at the end with sesame oil. So it’s not supposed to be “dry”.

    I also cut my sheets.

I think you did great- especially for your first time!

    I think you did great!

I use a whole sheet AND a half sheet, in one roll with fresh cooked and seasoned rice.

I lay out the sheet on the mat put rice 2/3 (sometime 3/4) of the way and put the half sheet on top of the rice. Towards the bottom. Add inside. Then roll. Also I take 3 to 4 grain of rice put it on the two top corners and in the middle and smoosh it to make a paste so the ends don’t roll off. If I’m adding shiso leaves I skip the extra half sheet. It creates a thin barrier so the juices don’t seep into the rice too much and dry out.

Look for kkoma gimbap. It’s smaller and waaay easier to roll. It also takes less prep bc the number of ingredients is less (bc its small)

I also like jumukbap it’s direct translated to fist bap. I like adding a little tuna-shiso salad in the middle and rolling it in seaweed flakes.

If I’m lazy I’ll just sprinkle gimjaban over rice and eat with kimchi and call it a day (aka bibimbap lol) . Gimjaban is stupid easy to make just add seaweed with sugsr and salt on frying pan hint of cooking oil and sprinkle with Sesame seeds. Fresh rice with butter and gimjaban is my comfort food.

That’s pretty good for a first try! I’ve tried many times and they don’t look half as good as yours 🥲 just revoke my korean card.

    Not bad!

Make sure you lay your ingredients evenly and all the way across the roll. Let the carrots and stuff hang off the side i.e. this isn’t a burrito.

Chop the beef slightly more, like rough chop it into ground beef. Also make sure this is spread evenly.
