I have been getting this from the local grocery store. It’s becoming one of my favorite coffees. I know what your gonna say about grocery store coffee. It’s stale . But this is within 2/4 weeks old . Sometimes even less then that. Try it out if your running low!!
Any thoughts?

Counter culture is honestly pretty solid especially if it’s not super old. It’s pretty safe and I’ve never had a problem with their stuff. Not my favorite but solid beans/roast. Usually priced pretty well at places like Whole Foods as well, think it’s like $14 a bag by me?

I find it more and more common, that grocery stores are stocking recently roasted coffee(within 1-2 months) that are pretty reputable in quality Nowadays! It’s nice for sure
Awkward-Customer
In that case, your grocery store is definitely better than mine.

I wish we had counter culture available locally. Maybe one day…
Senor-Cockblock
I can typically get it a week or two after roast for a great price. This and the Hologram are great consistent brews.

I was a counter culture guy until I switched to Larry’s. No reflection on counter culture’s beans. Would happily use them again it’s just I prefer Larry’s mainly because spouse and I had a really good cup of their decaf at ko an restaurant on our anniversary last year so I like that memory association.

Hologram is a go-to if I’m waiting on beans or if Whole Foods has an aggressive sale on ’em. Typically, they’re reasonably fresh. If they’re fresh, they’re usually competent, though they’re occasionally terrific.

Counter Culture is a great backup that can also be used successfully for pourover if you can’t find fresh beans for espresso. Definitely a “gateway drug” kind of entry into specialty~ish coffee

Not all grocery stores are equal. If they carry local stuff, it could be just fine
DougieMcElroy
This is my usual budget pick at target when I can’t get to my local favorite. But you just have to look at the dates. Usually fresh but I have had my wife pick out one that was 4 months old. Great espresso from it
salvajez
Some coffees taste best 3-4 weeks off of roast 🤓
Annual_Badger1208
Counter culture isn’t in the same league as like Peet’s or whatever, it’s actually pretty solid. Hologram is good too
raresteakplease
Very good roaster. One of my favorite coffee shops in San Fran uses them. I too get this bag from the grocery store if I am out of any of my trade coffee.
JigenMamo
I cracked the code with the coffee in lidl in ireland. They don’t have a roast date on it but they do have what day of the year it was produced. So if I can find a reasonable date I buy it, if not I spend twice the money for slightly better coffee.
Dblstandard
Nobody’s going to throw shade on counterculture, they do a decent bean
dirty_cuban
This is what I get at Target when I run out unexpectedly. It’s usually pretty fresh in my area as well, not hard to find less than 3 week old beans.
Look-Its-Marino
Oh hey! They are from my city. I prefer Larrys but Counter Culture is all over in Raleigh NC.
Any_Onion_7275
Man I wish my local grocery store would carry them id pick them up. I don’t recall which ones I tried but I liked a dark roast for my iced lattes.
khalestorm
Not sure why counter culture is getting “roasted” as an OK / gateway bean / roaster. They make really great stuff. I love Big Trouble and have a bag arriving in a few days.
congoasapenalty
I’ve used counter culture for years at my shop and for events… I have a couple posts about them as well. I’m using hologram right now and am about to order a single origin in a few days. They roast to order and have great wholesale prices.
urgent-kazoo
they have been roasting coffee since 1993. that year round blend has been around for many years
Diet_Christ
Counter Culture was one of the main 3rd wave pioneers, no surprise you like it. You can order direct from them to get it fresher.
GolfSicko417
Counter culture used to be an awesome specialty and still is honestly. Their light stuff is mainly single origin which I would prefer more blends in their lighter stuff to make it more interesting. Great value from them.
lumpybuddha
Counter culture is somewhat local to me so I can consistently get it from grocery stores within a week of it being roasted and it’s great. I buy them the most
DontGiveACluck
I’ve been getting this as well, but have been using for pour over and not espresso. Might have to give it a shot!

I like their decaf, it’s not bad
TShowalter
It’s my daily. I have a subscription so I don’t have to worry about stale beans. Sometimes I switch over to Stumptown Hairbender.
bcbarista
I trained at a counter culture roastery as a barista for a bit. Awesome setup and solid coffee. I loved the decaf kuichi. Or okolu. Or jabanto. Anything with cherry or blueberry notes lmao
Iggy95
Oh yeah they’re the classic. I’ve had Hologram, Forty Six, and Big Trouble, they’re all pretty solid roasts. These days I mostly buy from my local (shout-out Royal Mile Coffee Roastery) but in a pinch I’ll grab these from the grocery store.
GH5s
That’s a good roaster. Enjoy!
Vikaroo
This is my current favorite!! So glad to see it here!!
That1CoffeeDudeEthan
Nothing wrong with grocery coffee, so long as you know what you’re buying, you do you.
kevingrr
I’m in Chicago and find it with roast dates about 7-12 days at Whole Foods.
It’s pretty solid for the type/price/roast level, but yes I enjoy my single origin light roasts more.
ploogle
Love their Hologram roast.
zin1953
Counter Culture is a highly reputable roaster. Wait until you try it fresh!
ibattlemonsters
Naw I like big trouble for its nuttiness and the fragrance of hologram a lot. My grocer also sells so much of it that it tends to be one to two weeks old. It’s my go to backup or sometimes just because I want it
Key-Sky-1441
CC’s single origins and seasonals are excellent. Can’t find them in the grocery store, but my local coffee shop carries them and gets freshly roasted weekly. Always a good back up when my subscriptions are late or I runout early.
PolarDorsai
I get this brand at Fresh Market in upstate NY. It is good stuff.

What do you all prefer over Counter Culture Hologram? I’m trying to branch out and didn’t honestly know it gets much better!

yeah i got it from the grocery and it was 2 weeks from the roast day. The fact that they even have the roast date on grocery store stock is amazing. It’s usually just best before date. The Hologram is my favorite, it works for anything from espresso to pourover
finch5
Have you tried their Apollo (Ethiopian)? It’s really good.
I find this in Whole Foods from time to time really fresh too. I also like fresh Partners coffee.
