Any of the fresh fruit suggestions, or even some flowers (real fresh ones if you have access). You can also do ribbon, or curling ribbon for wrapping gifts.

Yep. Layer cakes need a lot of buttercream! If the recipe doesnt call for massive amounts of ingredients, I would double or x1.5 the recipe because I know it takes tons of buttercream.
