Using mayo on the outside of a grilled cheese gives such a nice crust.

Provolone, swiss, some ham heated in the pan before being added to the sammy and some red bell pepper left over from lunch.

Tried it… not a fan of mayo on the outside. In a pinch sure but butter IMO tastes better.

I only do this if I don’t have room temp butter, it’s not bad, but definitely not as good as butter imo.

I think its funny how polarizing butter vs mayo can be, I like both but tend to use mayo more often due to ease of use.

I tried mayo on outside and it was disgusting, butter is just way better , i think i had high expectations.

Welcome to the white side that then turns dark

Mayo is THE game changer. No other condiment needed.

  7. Bottom_Reflection

I use mayo instead of butter to help brown the crust

You can put it on the inside bread, too.

This isn’t a grilled cheese, it’s a melt. But mayo is great for the grilling. Looks good.

My wife can’t stand it when I use mayo for grilled cheese and melts (not a big mayo fan in the base case). I think it’s so much more convenient than butter. Still, I like the taste of butter better.

Jesus I said this once on Twitter and people lost their shit. Folks – in 2021 your biggest problem of the day is not what a random white guy said he uses to make grilled cheese. This is not a polarizing topic. Butter is good grilled cheese. Mayo is good grilled cheese. Having grilled cheese in your hand is good. Let’s not lose ourselves in the weeds of how it got there.

Your sandwich looks really pretty but all about butter for a grilled cheese

My mother in-law apparently always made sandwiches for my wife growing up with either meat or cheese, no condiments. When we first got together and I made her a sandwich, it blew her mind. She asked me what it was that I did to my sandwiches to make them so good. I just said I added mayo. She was flabbergasted. It didn’t even register to her that you could add mayo to a homemade sandwich. She thought that was only for restaurant sandwiches.

I’ve found that mayo cooks faster than butter so i need to turn the burner down in order to achieve proper cheese meltage.

Hear me out – honey mustard on the outside of a grilled cheese. Sooooo goooooood

  16. I technically use both. I don’t have the strength to say it out loud thank you for giving me a safe space

  17. ninersguy916

I use Mayo on the outside but then put butter in the pan so I get both

  18. No_Paper_8794

Anyone who says butter tastes better is just lying. I use both and have never tasted a difference.

Mayo is cool if you’re out of butter. But butter is way better than mayo.
