I rode ponies as a child at a stable owned by a Portuguese family and to this day I remember the sandwich the grandmother made me one day that she invited me into the house. It was some sort of pumpernickel swirl bread with raspberry jam, thinly sliced ham, and butter. I crave it 25 years later! Texturally, any berry jam would add a nice crunch because of the seeds and it helps cut through the fattiness of the ham while the butter adds a creamy aspect instead of cheese.
