New to espresso here. ECM Casa V machine and ECM basket. Filling with 18g of coffee. 42g out in 25 seconds + 5 second pre infusion. I find shots sometimes pull weaker and lighter in the body than I’d like. Thanks!

No. Looks ok. Try making shots at around 36 g in your 30 seconds.

If you get occasional weak shots, it is probably channeling. You might have to work on puck prep like WDT. A bottomless portafilter can identify any issues by making a mess. 🙂

  2. Nope. You can dose 16g in a 22g basket without problems, so this certainly shouldn’t be an issue for you. If the shots are weak or lacking body, either grind finer (ie. longer shot time) and/or don’t extract as much.

18g is fine, but you can also experiment with a 19-20g shot.

To figure.out the max volume of your basket, grind up your dose plus some extra. Do your puck prep at 20g and put a coin on top of the puck. Lock it into the machine and then unlock it and take a look. If the coin has made an indentation on the dry puck, you’ve hit the max for that basket.

No but could potentially be slightly underextracted if you are getting 46g in 25secs. All down to taste. I would grind slightly finer and fill up 18g in the basket again and go from there. 36g in around 30 secs is your ideal but everyone’s taste preference is different.
