I left my chimney starter at my sisters so I decided to buy some lighter fluid to grill up some quick burgers. I think I used too much ๐Ÿ˜‚ Iโ€™m standing at attention, and Iโ€™ve learned my lesson. Just build a fire the old school way next time.

No lighter fluid is best way to go. I still have memories of cookouts as a kid and my burger or dog having that โ€œlighter fluid tasteโ€ – donโ€™t miss that โ€œseasoningโ€ at all.

I use it when it’s most convenient. You don’t need a whole lot. But chimney use always gives more consistent heat.

So, charcoal chimneys are now a flex?

Lighter fluid has the most nauseatingly pungent smell. I don’t know how people actually light coals with it then cook over them

I’ve been grilling for about 130 years and I never use coal. Only flaming puddles of lighter fluid.

It seems most people in this sub do not actually use lighter fluid at all.

I have used lighter fluid every time and not gotten a single complaint. I sprinkle a little on all of the briquettes, stack them in a pyramid and light. Its ashed over in 15 minutes. It just seems convenient to me, very simple, and I’ve never noticed a taste.

I’m open to trying without it, but it seems more time consuming.

Also I thought chemically it’s evaporated/burnt by the time it is to cook but not sure the science on it.

I have a gas grill which is fast an easy but my buddy uses lighter fluid on coals all the time and I love that smell. Reminds me of bbq at the beach in the summer in SoCal

Cooking over wood is the best in my opinion

Never use lighter fluid but love the smell when others do.
