This is my Yiayia’s koulourakia – veganized! A very special no fuss recipe that anyone can whip up. Enjoy it with your favourite tea, Greek coffee, with company, or a nice little snack on your own. You will not miss the dairy or eggs.

You shall require the following:

2 3/4 Cup All Purpose Flour
1/2 Cup Raw Sugar
3/4 Cup Earth Balance
1 TBSP Bob’s Red Mill Egg Replacer
2 TBSP Water (to account for the egg replacer) + a little extra just in case
1/4 Cup Vegan Milk (to brush cookies)
1 TSP Pure Vanilla Extract
3/4 Oz Ouzo
2 TSP Baking Powder
1 TSP Ground Cinnamon (heaping)
Pinch Nutmeg
1/4 TSP Salt
White Sesame seeds

This will make about two dozen cookies depending on how evenly you split up the dough and the size.

This is a classic recipe that I remember from my childhood. It was always a staple and would often be around at my Yiayia’s house for snacking while watching classic movies, soap operas, or after playing in the garden or basement. It is also one of my Dad’s favourite to make for easy snacking and sharing.

Although many enjoy this for Easter or occasions. It is such a simple recipe and is commonly enjoyed year round.

Have a little extra water for mixing.

During the last few minutes or so of baking, you may want to rebrush the cookies with the vegan milk. You may also like to add a brushing of coconut oil as an option for a little more browning. If you are picky you can get the deodorised coconut oil which has been deodorised using a natural process (with steam).

If you do not keep alcohol in your house, and you are very strict about that, pick up some anise extract instead. I would say about two teaspoons should work.

Let me know if you try this out. Have you tried many veganized versions of Greek recipes? If so, I would be interested to hear from you. I enjoyed putting a simple vegan spin on my Yiayia’s (grandmother’s) recipe and I am always looking for different things to veganize.

  1. Ooops. I should have waited to the end of video, where you suggest Anise extract as a substitute for the ouzo. Sorry.

  2. Very innovative and entertaining. So Yia Yia kept it real! Then I am honoured that she took a shine to me over the years that we corresponded. May she rest in perfect peace! Much missed. She would be proud of the Hellenic Nigella! You've really set yourself some challenges with these videos.
