  1. As someone from Eastern PA I use sub/hoagie interchangeably

Grinder, but sub is also acceptable. (I realize I’ll be in the minority here, but that’s honestly the most common term where I live.)

Same thing. You can also call it grinder.

  4. Sub where I’m from, but I’ve heard hoagie from more than a few people locally.

I need to understand the difference between a sub, hoagie, and grinder.

A sub, 100%.  I live in Grand Rapids, MI.  I grew up in the suburbs of Detroit.  I thought hoagie was a type of bread/roll, not a type of sandwich.

Where I used to live there was a neighborhood sub shop that had a sandwich called a grinder. The sub shop delivered. Not the overpriced 3rd party delivery we have now. No this was like pizza delivery of old. Call em up, make an order, dude rolls up in a beater, pay him in cash.

So I order their grinder. I’m eating it and a roommate comes home. What are you eating? A grinder. Where from? The sub shop down by school on the corner. So he calls them. Delivery dude shows up. Roommate is happy.

So another person shows up at the flat. What are you eating? A grinder from the sub shop by school. So another person orders a grinder from the sub shop. Delivery dude shows up and another person is happy.

The cycle continues for 4 more iterations. Each new arrival seeing the preceding arrival eating a grinder had to order one. So 7 deliveries of a grinder at the same flat on a 15 to 20 minute schedule. All of my friends worked in restaurants. We didn’t have much money but we were sensitive to the kids who were grinding in restaurants. Delivery dude was making some cash from our generous tips.

Of course, like many experiences, cannot be repeated. That crazy day of ordering grinders was never repeated. Subsequent grinders were never as good.
