I bought this in a local shop in Pittulongu o and didn’t expect to be that expensive at the end, I don’t speak Italian and the butcher cut it much thicker than I wanted.

Looks like it was expensive because you got a giant cut of meat. That’s nearly a 3 lb steak

  2. larrybudmel

it’s Big Beef putting its thumb on the scales. Big Beef has an obvious monopoly on big juicy cuts of beef.

  3. Nookie1804

That’s a 1.3kg of T-bone. That’s a perfect price for it. Here in Colombia, that weight would cost 32.98.

Sometimes I get Piedmontese beef here in the US and it’s more expensive than USDA prime at times and much less marbled. But it has a very nice flavor profile and texture. Most of the time you get what you pay for with beef

“I don’t speak Italian,” then use google translate and play it loud enough for them to hear or get what you get..lol. You bought a 50 oz steak. That’s 4 servings. I lived in Italy for 3 years…steaks are not their specialty.

  6. It’s pretty lean. I’d say you got ripped. Was it good?

  7. I don’t know your local prices, but converted to $14.5 per lbs doesn’t sound that bad.

You know that’s a porterhouse???? Right????

MFW I am a little further up north mainland, casually eating that 90 CHF/kg steak I just made, and keep making, seeing this post lmao

You got a good hunk of meat. Meat is expensive. I would have gone for a different cut. This looks too lean, but it depends on how you prepare it. Could still be excellent.

    That’s a 3lb t bone steak for 40 eur. It would cost 4-5x that at a steakhouse. That’s cheap

  11. JJShadowcast

I usually pay 60 CAN per kilo these days.

This steak could have more marble.

  12. Fragglepusss

It appears you live in Europe, where there are more people than cows for some weird reason.

  13. CSweetfever

You have a new York strip on one side and tenderloin on the other. That’s why

You don’t speak Italian…the butcher cut it thicker. If I had to guess, someone got a little taken advantage of in some respect. Maybe the butcher thought they could make a little extra off a foreigner… hope its tasty tho! Also 3lbs is gonna add up.

  15. schloemerr

Because that’s a porterhouse. NY strip and Filet in one steak. My favorite cut

  16. Chaos-and-control

The world has become instance when shrimp is cheaper by weight than beef is in America, as a man in agriculture in blame the monopolization of the meat slaughter industry by companies like Tyson, driving the price of meat up and making farmers poorer and poorer every day

  17. juanjose83

I mean… It’s not expensive if you don’t buy it

  18. SkrotusErotus69

My main takeaway is that it doesn’t even look like a good piece of meat.

    Almost no marbling.

Takes alot of resources to raise cattle. Then you factor in fuel cost to feed them ( if the farmer isn’t growing their own grass and hay) fuel for transports, process, packaging, more fuel to transport to stores…. Also the market’s supply and demand for beef where you are. Even more if its a grass fed free range cattle…

TBH its really fuel cost of everything. raising your own meat if you have the land for it, actually isn’t that expensive if you have the feed/ grass. Its everything else that factors into it.

I could buy a whole cow from the rancher across the street ( grass fed and free ranged) and it ends up coming out to maybe around 4 – 5 USD per pound after hanging carcass weight. usually around 800lbs.

But the market in the US is cheaper give or take where you are and if you can buy a whole or even 1/4th a cow or not.

You’re likely confused because you time traveled from 2002.

  21. One portion of streak is about 150 g … this will feed at least 5 people (giving the bone and fat deduction).

The price doesn’t seem so bad now!

  22. TitusImmortalis

Cows and Chickens have demanded a cost of living raise and they’re passing the savings on to us!

    Pigs still don’t care.

  23. Big_Tap_1561

Consider yourself lucky . In TN the price of beef in general is outrageous.

  24. Fun-Crow6284

It’s GMO FREE, GRASS FED, CAGE FREE, & FULL ROAM, & GOOD SUNLIGHT, VITAMINS FED

  25. thcordova

It”‘s funny cause that is the same price I pay here in brazil without the conversion. About 30 reais/kg. And the real is worth 1/6 of an euro.

  26. Markyross

Italy cuts their T bones thick, bistecca fiorentina are t bones (specialty in Florence) and they cut them thick about 1.2 kg or more, typically come from the chianina cow, which is a working breed cow, steak should be cooked rare or or medium rare or it will be tough, doesn’t say what type of cow it is. That size steak in Canada would be around 100 Canadian (74 USD, 67 Euro) or more, so for me this is not expensive 🤦🏻‍♂️

  27. Jaeky_Man

1.3kilo (2.9lbs) porterhouse steak and you’re suprised that it’s expensive?

  28. Dry_Mathematician434

That is not expensive, try shopping at a Safeway for meats here in the US.

  29. basement-thug

Looks like it was cut a bit thin but hard to say.  I don’t cook steak less than 2″ (okay maybe 60-65mm) thick after trying it. It’s just another league when the cut is thick.
