If you're used to sweet oats with nut butter and fruit, I totally get how odd savory oatmeal might sound. But trust me, it's a whole different (and delicious) world. I recently made this savory oats recipe, and now it’s one of my favorite for a healthy, filling meal, whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or even dinner.
The base is creamy steel-cut oats, and it’s topped with garlicky sautéed greens, avocado, and soft-boiled eggs. Think of it like oats but with the heartiness of a grain bowl. If you love things like farro or brown rice with savory toppings, this is for you!
It’s quick to make, nutritious, and surprisingly versatile. Here’s the full recipe if you want to give it a shot: Delicious Savory Oats Recipe
Would love to hear if any of you have tried savory oats or have fun variations to share!

I’ll sauté up bell pepper, onion, basically any veggies left from week, bacon lardons, cheese. It’s such a satisfying quick meal. Steel cut oats simmer while I chop and fry up those things, top with some hot sauce.
It’s the only kind I eat. I make mine fairly spicy with things like curry powder or gochujang, and then throw in various veg and protein, depending on what’s around.
Welcome to the savory oats club! They really are delicious, but people sometimes can’t wrap their heads around it. I make them with paprika, chia seeds, flax, nutritional yeast, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Sometimes I’ll top with a fried egg (over easy) and some chili crisp. It’s quick, delicious, and very healthy. I’ll try the onions and avocado, that sounds fantastic!
Wrong sub, try r/cooking
Functionally, it’s pretty similar to grjts and congee at this point!
