The cantaloupe used to be completely green but it’s starting to turn more tan coloured. As well it didn’t have a scent near the end but now smells quite fruity! However the cantaloupe is still firmly attached to vine. Is it ready?
It has been raining the last day or so, which is what the slightly darker tan patches are (I rotated it on top of the plastic net produce container I am using as a cantaloupe stand after taking pic)

Smell the blossom end. If it smells like cantaloupe then it’s ripe. You can also smell cantaloupes on the blossom end in the store when shopping for ripe melons.

It looks close. Probably any day. I personally wait till it basically slips off the vine with ease. Looks great by the way.
Should basically detach itself with just picking it up when it’s ready. Just pick it up once a day and it’ll detach when ready!
Pick it now before the racoon hops the fence and eats it up yum
I’ve heard that the internodes that are green should turn yellow also.

If it’s a full slip variety (and good odds that it is; Hale’s Best is, and afaik is by *far* the most common type you’d find on a seed rack or sold as a transplant) then it’ll pop right off when it’s ready; probably in a couple days.
When they’re actually ripe they smell *strong*; like, MUCH stronger than what you’re used to at the grocery store.
At maximum ripeness the little green spots will turn beige and the entire melon will be overpowering with sweet canteloupe aroma.
it’ll eat! —- you can also pick early and let them sit for a couple days and when they smell sweet they’re good to eat!
What is this weird name you call it…in Australia we call them rock melons. 😉
Its ready when the color changes to less of a green and more of a cream color, it begins to have a nice very noticable aroma, and the stem seperates either on its own, or with a slight push with your finger.
