Ignoring the potatoes (sorry, but I think most people prefer them browned, but to each their own), it doesn’t look completely terrible. I think he needs to sear on higher heat. I’m assuming he didn’t dry brine either? Put those together and you’ll get a better sear without the grey band around the edges.
The important question is: did you enjoy it?
