    Not sure about this specific plant, but I have seen this happen with magnolia scale. The ants, wasps and flies are there because of the sap/sooty mold caused by the scale.

    Most likely this plant has similar issues and would explain the wasps and flies.

    The scales commentor is basically right. Something tasty has been collecting on the base of that stem and everybody wants a piece of the pie.

    We had a lovage plant in the back supposedly a cousin of celery and the wasps were everywhere on that plant. What plant is that ?
