This is my first experience working with chestnuts right from the tree. Those prickers go right through my gloves and it’s so much work getting the seeds out. It was fun and I’m glad I did it, but I would never want one of these trees in my yard.

A friend kindly gave me some and I’m so grateful.

You should be harvesting by stepping on them with some heavy boots, not using your hands to bust ’em open. Much easier and less painful! Not sure if all varieties do but the asian ones will also pre-split when fully ripe.

These spines are for the boars that eat them and destroy the nuts out in the wild. They will all burst eventually to be hidden and dispersed by squirrels.
