So you may remember a post a little while ago where I talked about my dad asking why I got into baking because it wasn't "manly" or whatever. I was looking through one of my cookbooks for the next recipe I wanted to try and I was looking at making the Chocolate Wakeups from the King Arthur Baking Company Essential Cookie Companion, and I said as much out loud. My dad looked up and said, "How about you do snickerdoodles?"

I looked at him and said, "I thought baking wasn't manly?"

He said he was sorry for saying that and if it made me happy, he was fine with it, especially since I was good at it.

Anyway, I made snickerdoodles and he loved them. I just finished another batch to take to work tomorrow. Thanks for all the support here!

    Dad: “Baking isn’t manly… unless… Maybe snickerdoodles?”

Great job OP, as another dude that bakes, I totally think it’s cool that your dad was big enough to admit his error. On a ironic side note, he went and asked you to bake to goofiest named cookie. 👍

Can you still make the chocolate ones 😉 I’m glad your dad came around to his senses. Baking just brings joy and nothing more (except unwanted pds lol)

That whole argument is so weird, how is baking not manly? It’s the same as saying that women belong in the kitchen. Meanwhile in the real word, most professionals bakers and chefs are men as far as I’m aware of

Solid work right there. Your dad is a good guy. He didn’t know what he was saying. Most men in fact behind the scenes are doing all the backbreaking labor of working in a bakery or as a pastry chef. Your dad would be surprised.

One needs a deft hand and a brain to balance out all the measurements and attention to detail. Man, or woman. It takes grit and a love of the craft to become a baker on any level.

Sounds like maybe your dad is stuck in an old school mentality, but it’s 2024 and there are no rules about what genders can do what jobs/hobbies/etc. There are no rules about gender at all! I’m sure he means well but needs to be gently guided towards a different way of thinking. Follow your passion and I’m sure no one will be complaining if you keep making them delicious treats.

Omg that’s adorable. The way to a man’s heart is with snickerdoodles.

Everyone has a judgement and an opinion until they don’t get any snickerdoodles!

Like why deprive yourself of snickerdoodles for some imaginary points in a made up category?

Santa Clause loves cookies and he’s a man…a jolly man! Cookies make you happy.

If King Arthur is man enough, so are you

Respect to your dad for saying that and being willing to correct a mistake he made. Acknowledging it even, he clearly loves and cares for you, enjoys seeing you happy doing this, and is encouraging you to make recipes he likes himself.

Hope you both share many a baked treat and kind words together ahead

Cooking and baking is manly because your loved ones will be attracted to you(r food). Lol

Glad to hear OP! Hope he enjoyed those manly snickerdoodles.

Just know that I’ve now started taking to calling random things “manly” this or that when baking and when asked why they’re manly I just say it’s made by a man

    Snickerdoodles for the win! 😁😁😁

I just checked the website looking for Chocolate wakeups and drew a blank, so I had to get up and go into the other room to check my copy of the Essential Cookie Companion. These are pretty much the same as Wienerstube Cookies. I make an oval log, refrigerate and slice, then sprinkle with sparkling sugar before baking.

Some of the best chefs in the world are men and that’s always been the case. I never understood how his idea that cooking is for women or seen as not manly. Men don’t eat? What the fuck lol

Aww glad he apologized. Perhaps you’ll bake something together one day. Could bake some savory snacks then watch a movie together or something. 💙

I’ve had plenty of women share this viewpoint too. I (32m) got into baking a few years ago and I’m really good at it. Everyone loves my stuff. But for whatever reason nearly everyone older than 50 in my family will tell me “You’ll make a good wife someday!” as they eat my cookies or whatever. I think they think they’re complimenting me somehow. Makes me want to slap it out of their hands. Why can’t a guy just like to bake and cook? So stupid.

  18. TheRunningAdipose

Ah yes, the manly snickerdoodle. The most masculine of all the cookies.

But seriously, kudos to your dad. It’s never too late to grow as a person and it’s never too late to acknowledge your mistakes. Especially if you get a cookies in return.

I’m a dude and I make the cookies and I do the kid’s birthday cakes. Want to be a surely teen and not tell me what you want? Fine. You get a roadkill cat birthday cake. Although the foot tall 6 layer rainbow cake had the kids looking on in awe.
