The Art of Pizza on State Street in Chicago!

Really good cheese pull and the sauce was damn good. However, if most Chicago deep dish is like this one then I think it's not for me as I feel like 75% of every bite just tastes like bread.

I heard that deep dish is just a thing for tourists. Any Chicagoans here to verify that?

Tavern style pizza is the real Chicago ‘style’ of pizza. Deep dish or stuffed pizza is a total novelty but I never hated it like most pizza snobs not from Chicago

I’ve had it but was full after a slice. The locals that we went with dreaded and have bailed because they didn’t really like it. It was really good but I rather have New York or Napolitana style. I haven’t had a craving to eat deep dish again it’s been years. But it was good.

How did you get a deep dish pizza which has the highest ratio of toppings to bread and come away the take that 75% of every bite just tasted like bread? It’s like pure cheese and sauce and all you can taste is bread?!?!

If you felt it was too much bread try the skinny deep dish. You can get that at Labriola on Michigan..not far from Art of Pizza. My Pi on Damen also has a much lighter deep dish pizza. I would also recommend trying tavern style at Pat’s on Clark or Flo & Santos.

I went to Chicago this summer with the express purpose of understanding deep dish pizza. I ate at a bunch of places, and you know what? I like deep dish now. I didn’t used to. It’s a different thing than the pizza I usually eat, and in fact I’m okay with not calling it pizza if that helps. But, it’s delicious in its own right. I did not find it to be too bready at all, though I didn’t eat at Art of Pizza.

Deep dish has never been good to me. Ratios are always off and it feels like a lazy made pie. Not a fan. Looks good though lol

I’ll add that deep dish really comes into its own with sausage, which all good deep dish establishments make in house with a bite and consistency that is specific to deep dish.

I have no issues with veggie pizzas but I do not think deep dish shines when made vegetarian.

Just needs some cheese on it and it will be good.
