This “grate” apple crisp eliminates the time consuming prep of peeling, coring, and slicing apples. Besides using less effort, we get a texture and flavor closer to an apple jam, which makes for a uniquely delicious crisp. And yes, you’ll definitely want a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Enjoy!

  1. Apple butter is the BEST thing to top a really good piece of buttered sourdough toast!

  2. Thought this looked pretty good so I went to add Grape Nuts to my grocery order. Not available in local stores (South Western Ontario, Canada) and the best price I found online was over $40 with delivery. I feel a substitution coming on.

  3. I usually use skin on apples. It's fast and skin can be crispy and colorful it's fine. I slice the apples and put them in honey and ginger.

  4. This man taught me how to make buttermilk biscuits, as a British citizen. Just wanted to let you know that your recipes are international and help hopeless “chefs” like myself 🙂

  5. It wasn't a valid excuse to begin with! Most people could really stand some practice on their knife skills like you said. And something with this much fruit would be a terrific way to "hone" your "pear"-ing knife abilities!😊

  6. Although I'm sure that this recipe tastes good, I must recommend Chef Johns original Apple Crisp recipe from many years ago. That original recipe is the reason that I started subscribing to Food Wishes, as it is the BEST Apple crisp recipe on the internet!

  7. If you don’t have apples then potatoes work just fine, I usually substitute butter with Vaseline and it comes out great. My mother used to make this every Christmas.

  8. Sometimes my mom would add a few cinnamon red-hot candies in the tipping. Loved it as a kid. I asked for Apple crips instead of birthday cake.

  9. Hi Chef John,
I've never seen "Grape Nuts" since I don't live in the USA.
Is there any cereal I can substitute for it?

  10. A recipe I was hoping to find but did not expect to find it exactly on time! I'm 'grate'ful for your recipes 😊

  11. God love you, chef John. You add humor to your wonderful recipes. I so enjoy watching your videos. Then making the recipes, of course 🤗.

  12. Easy fix. Bake the apples by themselves. Make your granola-like topping. Assemble and serve. Abracadabra. Cooler apple. Still crispy topping. Tadaa.

  13. Sorry, but I loathe grating. I think I will use a mandoline for thin slices, stack them and mince. Or throw the apples in a food chopper (look like a food processor but small and only chop). Everything looks good but no grape nuts for me, just more oats.

  14. I wanna make this, but "Grape Nut cereal" an an US product which is not available in germany. Any product ideas for a replacement to get a similar result? Help 🙂
