I couldn’t figure out how to add a description to my image post so forgive me.
— Ok, so somehow I didn’t use my 10 year old egg for a few month (shame on me I know). I left my daisy wheel cap inside where I always do but rust got the better of things. And although it still works, it just pains me to look at it all rusty.
Following the FAQ’s over on r/castiron for restoring and so far things are going well. Lots of scouring to get the rust off but man am I happy with how the top two pieces ended up.
Now just have to work on the main piece and we’ll be back to egging!

Did you season it?

Normally I’ll drop mine into the coals after every 3-4 cooks, and shut the dampers off, there’s enough residual heat left to burn out the grease and keep it clean, I’ll spray it with canola oil the next cook to keep it from rusting.

Mine looks just like yours used to! What did you use to scour it? I’m thinking of taking a drill with a metal brush attachment to mine and then seasoning it like you did.

Nice work, give it a quick spray with canola or pam every now and then to protect it

I soaked mine in vinegar for a couple of days. Worked great.

Evapo-rust is a miracle product btw. Strain and reuse.
Soak for a day or so, strain and put back in the bottle. Hit your rusted piece with a wire wheel. I use an attachment for my drill.
But good job OP.

Spraying with cooking oil gets me the same results – no scrubbing.
