Hello! TLDR: I bought a used Vertuo machine from 2016 and a frother that’s probably from the same year. Am I an idiot or is it still good? Seems to work fine but I don’t know for sure. Should I buy the descaling solution from the Nespresso website?

Full story:
Fresh off a high from my recent Eurotrip, I went to purchase a new Nespresso machine on Prime Day. But then I thought to look at Facebook Marketplace first. I saw someone selling this machine along with a frother and some other accessories (reusable pods, coffee grinder that I didn’t need) for “only” $60 (my husband thinks I was ripped off and I’m in denial but he is probably correct.)
The only research I did before purchasing was a reverse image search on Google of the photo of the machine posted on marketplace. It looked like I was buying a $300 machine for $60 so I rushed to the messages and begged to pick it up ASAP.
When I returned home with what I thought was a total steal, I looked at the back only to see a barcode that is telling me the machine is from 2016. (I assume the frother is from the same year)

They seem to work FINE, but I don’t really have a basis to compare it to. How do I know if it’s in bad shape? Should I buy the descaling stuff on the Nespresso site?

Thank you!!!

Should be okay. The group generally recommends against steel and aluminum reusables. The general belief is they can damage the bearings, which were not designed for that kind of mass. Plus they generally suck.

  2. If it looks clean inside, well maintained, and most importantly doesn’t smell weird like mold or like fish tank, if coffee tastes good, then it should be good.
I once got a used machine, cleaned it, descaled it, but still fish tank smell was there and coffee taste the worst thing ever..

  3. I have the same machine after going through three shitty vertuo next machines. I think you made a good choice regarding durability. Personally I’d clean it and descale for my own peace of mind, and stay clear of those reusable pods. Get a variety pack of different pods to see what you like and enjoy looking up recipes to make different drinks if you’re into that. Cheers ☕️

I currently have a vertuo next that broke after just 2 years. I will never go back to a vertuo as I know a lot of people with the same issues as me. Will buy a machine with the original system since those last forever with regular cleaning and descaling.

Mine cracked the pod holder by itself and now if you rinse or descale it, water goes inside the machine and into the wiring. It’s basically a fire hazard.

I can’t recommend any of these vertuo machines as they all suck.

I just picked up a “new” condition of this exact model off of secondipity for about $80 shipped. I had no idea the same model was being sold since 2016.

The bad part is the pod container on the right got cracked and they’re all out of replacements.

I think I got a deal but I’d have to spend more money on a replacement part.

Ohhh I thrifted this model for $20. When I turned it in it was stuck in descaling mode or something, had to eff around with it, but besides the button being slightly stupid sometimes, it works well! And tbh I like it better than my sisters newly bought pop version. I just feel the coffee tastes way better in mine than in hers and I’ve had my dad agree with me too. I honestly would say this so the best model you could get out of the Vertuos.

that is one of the best vertuo machines, however those metal reusable pods will damage the machine over time as it was never designed for those

They are okay but don’t use the metal reusables

I have this model, just in a different color. Purchased new spring 2020. Very happy with it (though we prefer the brew of our OL Essenza Mini).

I had this one and it was GREAT. Loved it. I upgraded into. Creatista or I’d still have it.

  11. I have the same machine, and it’s still going strong since 2018 👌🏻

Thank you everyone!!! I feel much better about my purchase and will NOT be using the reusable pods per your recs!

You didn’t make a mistake if you like vertuo pods. I have that machine. Bought it used. Turns out I do not like the vertuo 7.7 oz pods. Too bitter. So I only use my OL machine and am going to give the vertuo away

  14. I bought the same machine at a local thrift store for $16 (Canadian!) and It has worked great ever since.

FWIW, before actually making any coffee with it, I descaled and cleaned it.

  15. That’s the one they used to have the “free” machine offer for when it wasn’t as popular. it’s a great machine, definitely better than some of the newer ones, but that might be part of why so many are around. i like mine

if they maintained it well then it’s a great deal. at 60 bucks it’s worth a shot. just would clean it thoroughly first and probably descale. if it isn’t usted I’d eep using it.

I have this same machine and it works really well.
It’s probably my 3rd Vertuo and I think it looks nicer in my kitchen than the others did.

My roundhead I got in 2016 is still going strong and so is the frother. You got an decent deal. We have replaced the bearing because it got loud but that was $10 on Amazon.

Nice machine. Decent sized water tank. I’m currently using a pop. Tank is tiny

The new Aeroccino4 Milk Frother‘s are considerably better than the ones back in those days which used to burn towards the bottom and were hard to clean

I recently got rid of this machine for one of their new ones…still regret it.
