Well, I'm totally blown away that this was possible. I was ready to just buy a replacement cap but am thrilled with the final results.

Even the screws and washers are original.

3-4 rounds of seasoning according to the r/castiron FAQ's.

Just used vinegar/water to help and steel wool/scour pads to get the rust off.

    This looks amazing and I may go back and restore mine. This doesn’t negate the fact though that this is a pretty awful design from the start.

    My smokeware cap is so much more practical, simpler to use and blocks rain which is great this time of year. I gave up on my green egg cap after it kept getting gummed up from grease.
