Newish gardener and realizing you're supposed to just cut the plant and leave the roots in the soil. Should I just "plant"these back in the soil? Or mulch them up and spread it over the garden

Different strokes for different folks.
When I was a kid, we pulled at the end of season. We had a clean garden in comparison to others and we also rototilled yearly.
Now that I have containers and I will have a hard time keeping the soil in the containers… I think I will cut off most things. Will Probably dump and remix the soil in the spring so…
So….Since it is out, leave it out.

At this point just turn it all into compost or mulch.
Next year, I recommend cutting off at the base – or carefully digging up the rootball and overwintering.
